Our Story
Maybe you’ve noticed having sweaty palms when going to a meeting, or having your heartbeat race when you have to talk to someone, or a burning red face when having to talk in public. Perhaps you’ve noticed feeling dizzy, having trouble breathing or nausea when you least expect it. Perhaps you’ve begun to isolate yourself. The experience of anxiety, depression and stress can be overwhelming. For people who suffer from these conditions activities such as meeting friends for dinner, going to work, having to speak in public, are painful challenges that are accompanied by negative physical and emotional symptoms
Mood disorders are more common than most people think and ARE treatable. In terms of treatment there are two options : 1) medication and 2) psychotherapy. While medication does help it only treats the symptoms whereas psychotherapy treats the symptoms and, in the form of therapy that I practice - Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (or ACT for short), clients are taught strategies that they can use when they have discontinued therapy. (As a psychologist I cannot prescribe medications and if I think any of my clients might benefit from medication I refer them to a Nurse Practitioner.)
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is very different from other forms of talk therapy in that it is active, engages the client and with the collaboration of the therapist, the client learns strategies they can use to lessen their anxious, depressed, panicked, or stressed state.......and go on to enjoy their lives!
Research has shown that psychotherapy provides the most lasting relief from mood disorders NOT medication.
