Quality sleep isn't just about feeling rested; it's an essential ally in your pain recovery journey. 🌙✨

Deep sleep is the prime time for physical recovery – mending bones, ligaments, and muscles. 💪

But it doesn't stop there!

REM sleep tackles the emotional side, managing stress and processing emotional events.

And all together, sleep helps to support the balance of our natural pain-killing chemicals. 😌

Here's the scoop: When you prioritize your sleep, you're giving your body the best chance to heal and conquer persistent pain. 🛌✨

Feeling those daily twinges? Your sleep might be the game-changer you've been missing. 🔄

Here are the top 5 strategies that have given my patients their most restful sleep:

1️⃣ Create an ideal sleep environment – clean, dark, and cool.

2️⃣ Set consistent bed and wake times – in bed before 11pm when possible, and at least 7 restful hours of sleep each night (preferably 8).

3️⃣ Make sleep-friendly nutritional choices – avoid eating at least 2-3 hours before going to bed.

4️⃣ Warm up with the sun – focus on waking up on time, adhering to a morning routine, and getting sunlight in the morning.

5️⃣ Cool down at night – make every effort possible to refrain from work, electronics, and artificial light for at least 1 hour prior to bed.

🚨 5 Common Low Back Pain Culprits! 🚨

There are many reasons why someone may be having low back pain.

Check out these 5 common reasons I often see in my patients:

1️⃣ Sitting too much: Sitting all day can wreak havoc on our bodies. Prolonged sitting reduces circulation, weakens muscles, and places repetitive stress on the back. My most successful patients focus on avoiding prolonged sitting, getting their daily steps in, and exercising regularly throughout the week. We were built to move and be active!

2️⃣ Tight shoulders, upper back, and hips: Tightness in the joints and muscles above and below the low back can lead to compensations. This can result in extra stress through the low back. This is why the whole body is always taken into consideration with everyone I work with. We assess above and below the painful areas to make sure we uncover the root causes of the pain.

3️⃣ Not using core muscles properly: Core muscles might need some extra love. Weakness or improper activation of our abdominal and low back muscles can contribute to pain. But over-activation and excessive tension of those same core muscles can also increase pain as well! My most successful patients learn how to not only activate and strengthen their core, but also learn how to relax their core so they’re not overly tense and stiff all day. It’s all about the right balance!

4️⃣ Moving in a way that strains your body: Ever think about how you move during the day or during exercise? Even when someone has great mobility, flexibility, and strength, poor movement mechanics can cause excessive stress on the back which can potentially lead to pain. My patients learn to lay in bed, sit, stand, walk, lift, carry, and squat in ways that help them not only reduce pain and protect their spine, but also improve overall strength and endurance.

5️⃣ Not prioritizing lifestyle habits that support recovery: Sleep, nutrition, and stress control are critically important factors that impact pain. It’s not just about the way we move. Our ability to recover from daily activities and life’s stressors can impact how much pain we feel on a daily basis. Remember: Sleep is the prime time for recovery and repair. Nutrition provides the building blocks for recovery and repair. And the nervous system controls the body’s ability to make it all happen. 🍏💤
