Larry's Journey for a Liver

Larry's Journey for a Liver Larry was diagnosed with stage IV liver cirrhosis during the fall of 2015.

Liver cirrhosis is a type of liver damage where healthy cells are replaced by scar tissue. Progression of the disease now requires Larry be listed for a liver transplant at MUSC.

We are home! His liver blood tests were coming down, the itching was getting better and not as jaundice. God is good all the time and thankfully is was just the backup in the stent. He may have to have another one put in at some point they said , they will go in and look in a couple of months. Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers, they are felt. We love you all and grateful to have wonderful friends and family 🙏❤️

It’s been a while since we have posted but things were going very well , Larry has been out and about. Sunday came and Larry was itching like a wild man and when we looked his eyes were yellow. This is how he reacted when the bile duct was blocked but having the stent in I was not sure what was going on. After talking to transplant service we came on down to MUSC where we were admitted. His liver functions were elevated but scans did not show any issues with the stent. Monday his labs were looking better but they wanted to go in and look at the stent to see if there were any issues and that was done today. There was some sludge in the stent so they removed it and said the bile duct looked good now. If his labs are stable in the morning we will probably be discharged. It’s crazy how things can change in such a short time but this is part of the transplant journey and we will continue to ask God to carry us on. He will be glad to get back home to his bed though and his puppy is ready for him to come home 🤣. Thank you all again for remembering us in your prayer, much love to you all 🙏❤️

I am delighted to provide an update regarding my/Stacey's health status and express sincere appreciation to everyone who has offered support and prayers during my 9.5-year journey thus far. I am profoundly grateful for the love, assistance, and encouragement I have received from all of you thus far. Upon my initial diagnosis with liver cirrhosis stage 4 on August 15, 2015, I surrendered my situation to my Savior Jesus Christ, trusting in His will and providence. This has indeed been a journey, but with God's love and guidance, the support of each and every one of you, and my family's support and love, have made it easier to get to this point so far in my journey and am improving every day. I am pleased to report that my recent procedure to remove the internal/external bile duct drain tube was successful, and a stent was placed to facilitate bile drainage and expand the severely restricted bile duct. I will require this stent to be in place for approximately six months, after which its effectiveness will be reassessed. My medical team has explained that this is a potential complication for transplant patients, but fortunately, it does not impact or impede my recovery process, which is progressing well. We are now focused on restoring my bloodwork numbers to my normal, which is gradually improving. I hope this update provides insight into my current condition. Normally, my wife Stacey handles the updates, but due to her recent shoulder surgery on Tuesday, which was successful, I am taking on this responsibility, hopefully I do a decent job explaining. Stacey's surgery was successful also and did not require a shoulder replacement, and her condition is being managed with pins, screws, rods, plates, etc. Unfortunately, we are currently apart, with me in Summerville because of several doctor appointments throughout this week and Stacey in Lexington with our son Player/Michaela . So we look forward to being reunited on Thursday evening, because we have rarely been apart this long (maybe we really do like/love each other 😂). I am grateful for my wife's love and support throughout our almost 41 years together, especially throughout this liver journey. She has handled everything from scheduling appointments, explaining everything to me (which is medically illiterate), ordering medications, transporting me to/from all my appointments, partially because of doctors not wanting me to drive since May'23 because of some complications developed from the liver disease. She has done all this and much more, basically leaving me to concentrate on staying as healthy as possible up to the transplant and now recovery. I thank God every day for blessing me with Stacey, my wife, my lifelong partner, my best friend, mother of my children Larry, Caroline, Player, and grandmother (TeTe) to our precious grandbabies Eliza, Livvie (I call Birdie), Ensleigh, Huntley, Emmy, William (I call Lil' W***y), and Hudson. This experience has reaffirmed my faith in God's providence and my love for Him.

••Sorry for the long post.••

God Bless each and every one of you!!
Larry

We are finally busting out the hospital after 8 days. Larry has a fungal infection in his bloodstream and we had to wait on cultures to make sure he did not need a line to get medicine IV at home. Thankfully, he can just take medicine by mouth. We love our family up here on 6 East - everyone is amazing and we will miss them, but we are so ready to get home.

Thank you all for the thoughts and prayers, we love you all 🙏❤️

It’s been a slow couple of days, they have discovered that Larry has a fungal infection and he is on IV medication. We are waiting to make sure we are on the correct medication which takes a few days. In the meantime, the eye doctor will see him tomorrow because the fungal infection can cause various other issues with different organs. He will also have some abdominal X-rays hopefully tomorrow as well. Please continue to keep him in your prayers, we can definitely feel them 🙏❤️

Well, here we go again - back at MUSC. Larry started with low grade fever Saturday night, no other symptoms. It resolved during the night but came back yesterday, and it was 102.9 at the highest. We have been in the ER waiting for a room until about an hour ago and are FINALLY getting settled in for a little sleep.

The blood test are about the same as last week with mild elevation in the liver enzymes - so they are not sure what is causing the fever.

Please keep us in your prayers that this will be an easy fix and short stay! We know God is in control and He has us!! Much love to you all ❤️🙏

We busted out of the hospital yesterday afternoon, the drain tubes seem to be doing their job as the blood test have improved. He is moving very slow, is weak and has almost no appetite, I’m hoping now that we are home he will start to feel better 🙏. We follow up next week for labs and doctor appointments and I will keep you posted. Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers, they are very much appreciated ❤️🙏

Well it’s been a low key 59th Birthday! Larry has been napping off and on today and blood test have improved since placing the drain tubes. He is very blessed and thankful to his donor that he is alive to see 59 ❤️. He is in a good amount of pain with getting in and out of bed and even turning over with the tube but hopefully that will get better soon.
God bless each and every one of you and keep those prayers coming, love to you all 🙏❤️

Sorry we have not updated, but the weekend was slow. Yesterday, the doctors tried to place a stent in the bile duct (attaches from liver to small intestines) but were unable to get the wire through because it was so blocked. The blockage is why the labs are so elevated and he is jaundice because the toxins are just building up and have no way of being filtered and flushed out his system.

The teams got together this morning and decided to try another procedure where a drain is guided from outside through the liver and pray it works. For now, he has a drain tube on his side with a bag attached for fluids to drain out, as well as the one from the liver to small intestine so it drains as it naturally should. This system will stay in place for 4 weeks so that everything has time to “calm down” and then they will take drains out and place a stent in bile duct. We will be here probably another day or so to make sure the labs are improving and all is looking well.

It has been a long few weeks, but as Larry says, God is driving this boat and He will continue to walk us through this bump in the road. Thank you all for the calls , texts and most of all the love and prayers ❤️🙏
