Twice weekly ear cleaning is a great idea, particular for pets with allergies, floppy ears, or chronic ear infections. Some ear cleaners are medicated to try to reduce the pathogens that commonly cause issues. When cleaning ears, we recommend that you FILL the ear ca**l so that both the horizontal and vertical parts of the ear ca**l get the cleaner in them. Massage the base of the ear (you might hear a "squishing" noise) to help agitate the ear cleaner and break loose any debris. After your pet shakes their head, you can use a cotton ball to wipe out the gunk that comes up. Some pets don't appreciate the cooler temperature of the cleaner, so you might need to warm it up a little. Some cleaners can be more irritating on inflammed tissue, so if your pet usually is good for ear cleaning but is acting painful, that might be why. If your pet doesn't tolerate their ear getting filled with the liquid ear cleaner, you can try to super-saturate a cotton ball to where it is dripping wet, put it in the top of the ear ca**l, and massage the ear to "squish" the liquid into the ear ca**l. You may need to use multiple cotton balls if you have to do it this way. Dog with hairy ear ca**ls can benefit from the ears being plucked- this helps to open the ears and allow air to circulate, reducing retained moisture and preventing excess debris from being stuck into the hair.

March 3rd every year is World Wildlife Day, which was created to promote conservation, fight illegal wildlife trade, and understand the vital role biodiversity plays in a healthy planet and for human well-being. At least 6 species were declared extinct in 2025, while others were moved from endangered to protected status. Studies show that the health of wildlife in an area directly represent the health of the area itself. The ratio of predators to prey can show how balanced the ecosystem is, and prey animals help with pollination and seed dispersal, which in turn helps vegetation and to prevent erosion. If there are toxins in an area, the more delicate animals and plants are affected first, which then affects others in the area.

March 2nd is International Rescue Cat Day. This day was created to raise awareness about cats in shelters needing homes, encouraging adoption and support for rescue organizations. Numbers estimate that there are 70 MILLION unowned cats in the US, with only about 2% of those cats having been spayed or neutered. With an average litter size of 4-6 kittens, that is a lot of cats being added to the population each year. While some of these kittens get picked up and taken to shelters or rescues to find forever homes, most of these cats say in their feral cat community, leading more more strays. Trap-neuter-and release programs have proven to be successful in many areas, but there are still a large number of cats euthanized every day because there just aren't enough homes for them. While adopting from a shelter or rescue can definitely help save lives, donating to some of these stray cat programs can go a lot farther to reduce population numbers and decrease the number of euthanasias of cats that don't get adopted.

There are other reasons for an animal to have bad breath beyond dental disease. Leaky a**l glands, skin infections, and kidney disease can also cause bad breath. Your pet cleaning under their tail or licking at skin lesions can transfer that smell to their mouth, and under-functioning kidneys cause waste product to build up in the blood stream, making your pet's breath smell somewhat urine-like. If your pet has bad breath, schedule an appointment for us to do an exam!

As we are starting to get into warmer weather, if your pet isn't on heartworm prevention, now is a great time to get started on it. Heartworms are spread by mosquitoes and they thrive in temperatures above 50 degrees F. Heartworm prevention options include a 6 month injection, and 12 month injection, and monthly pills that also deworm for intestinal parasites, with the added option of included flea/tick prevention. Heartworm prevention is prescription only, and heartworm testing is required to start on prevention.

February is Spay/Neuter Awareness Month. Some studies are in support for waiting until certain breeds of dogs are closer to 18-24 months before spaying or neutering, but in general, we still recommend the surgery closer to 6 months of age. For female animals, the more heat cycles they go through, the higher their risk of mammary tumors even after being spayed. Accidental litters happen fairly frequently as well, and people underestimate how messy a dog's heat cycle can be. Behavior changes influenced by hormones can also be hard to handle for some owners, especially with certain breeds of dog. Throw in the fact that there are already many puppies and kittens in need of a home, it is a good practice to get your family pets sterilized.

Today is National Wildlife Day. As houses are getting built in more rural areas, we are starting to overlap into territory that wild animals call home. With that, we are seeing an increase in certain diseases and parasites. Rabies, Leptospirosis, and tick disease in particular are being seen more frequently and are also infective to humans.

There are 2 weeks left to get your appointment scheduled for our Bravecto Quantum day on Saturday, March 7. Save 20% off the cost of a 12 month injection to prevent fleas and ticks on your dog. Fleas can cause tapeworms, anemia, Flea Allergy Dermatitis, and less commonly Bartonellosis and the Bubonic Plague. Ticks cause Lyme disease, Ehrlichia, Anaplasma, Coonhound Paralysis, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, and more. Tick diseases can also be spread through tick bite to people, so by protecting your pet from ticks, you can also help protect your human family members.

February 19th is National Boston Terrier Day. Bostons became a recognized breed in 1893, and have stayed consistent in the top 25 most popular dog breeds due to their temperament and their smaller size helping to make them more affordable to care for than larger breed dogs. They are a brachycephalic breed- meaning they have a shortened nose- so they can be sensitive to heat and care needs to be taken when they are under anesthesia. They also have a tendency to snore as a result of being brachycephalic. We want to see your Boston Terriers!

February is Heart Month! Many times, heart disease is related to genetics but it can also be a result of outside factors. In particular, grain-free diet related dilated cardiomyopathy can cause a poorly functioning heart and a heart murmur that, if not too advanced, can be reversed when the diet is adjusted. With genetic heart murmurs, it can be hard to know how quickly things will progress, and while the ideal thing would be to consider a referral to a cardiologist, most of the time it is decided to just treat symptomatically when coughing and exercise intolerance start to be noticed.
