After an extraordinary 40-year career in nursing, Lynn Vermeulen, BSN, RN, CEN, is stepping into a well-earned retirement, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, mentorship, and heartfelt care at SSM Health Ripon Community Hospital. Today is her final day with more than 33 years of service with the hospital.

Lynn’s journey began long before she joined Ripon, but it was in 1991 - when she returned to Wisconsin and accepted a position in the ICU - that her impact truly began to take root. Over the next 34 years, Lynn became a cornerstone of the hospital community, evolving into a board-certified emergency nurse, an ACLS and CPR instructor, and a trusted preceptor to countless students and nurses.

For the past 28 years, Lynn served in the Emergency Room, where she cared for entire families across generations. Her compassion and calm presence in moments of crisis made her a beloved figure among patients and colleagues alike. Lynn’s describes her ER team as a second family - one that celebrated birthdays, enjoyed baseball games, hosted cookouts, and shared laughter through the years.

Now embracing retirement, Lynn is transitioning into a vibrant new chapter filled with pickleball, hiking, gardening, E-biking, and scenic rides in Gary’s ’66 Chevelle. She’s exploring painting, reading, cooking classes, reconnecting with friends, and planning travels to sunny destinations.

SSM Health Cancer Care in Fond du Lac is now utilizing AlignRT® Surface Guided Radiation Therapy (SGRT) technology, which helps set up and monitor patients with sub-millimeter accuracy, while in many cases eliminating the need for small tattoos or marks for treatment alignment purposes.

The AlignRT® system uses special software and 3D cameras to track patients’ movements in real-time during radiation therapy. This is very important, because patients must remain perfectly in position as the hospital’s Varian TrueBeam® Linear Accelerator delivers treatment to the cancer site.

Michael Vander Kooy, MD, an SSM Health Cancer Care radiation oncologist, shares how this new technology is benefitting local cancer patients. https://soundcloud.com/radioplusaudio/ssm-health-cancer-care-adds-new-radiation-technology-for-pinpoint-accuracy-3

August 6 was Carnival Day at SSM Health Adult Day Services!

Clients and staff played different popular fair games, ate fair food - such as cream puffs and corn dogs, enjoyed trishaw bike rides through the park, and took a virtual tour of the world’s largest carnival.

Special note to Sandy Isaac, whose dad utilizes Adult Day Services and used to run Dick’s Concessions at Lakeside Park for several years. They each wore their Dick’s Concessions T-shirts. https://www.ssmhealth.com/locations/location-details/adult-day-services-merrill-ave

SSM Health St. Agnes Hospital is in the process of donating 39 gently used patient beds to Moraine Park Technical College and Marian University for use in training nursing students. Both nursing programs combine theory, lab practicum, simulation, and clinical instruction, and allow students the opportunity to prepare students for a career in nursing.

“As we face the many challenges in health care staffing, we are looking for creative solutions to strengthen partnerships with our local academic partners,” according to Tami Schattschneider, SSM Health St. Agnes Hospital VP Patient Care Services/Chief Nursing Officer. “Helping to support each of these schools is one of the steps we are taking to help relieve the nursing shortage and help qualified applicants at our local schools.” https://www.ssmhealth.com/employee-culture-communications/mynews/wisconsin/fond-du-lac/2025/7/patient-bed-donations

Samantha didn’t know what to think when she started getting short-of-breath last winter.

“It just happened for a while and I decided to visit my primary care provider … they noticed my liver was really enlarged,” she said. “I thought I was just gaining weight.”

Unfortunately, additional testing revealed news that no one wants to hear: cancer.

Samantha was diagnosed with an extremely rare cancer with tumors in her liver that had already metastasized to her lungs. Doctors admitted her to the hospital and quickly began treatments.

She says that between her current cancer journey and a previous battle with melanoma, cancer has had a profound impact on her life. But not all of it has been bad.

“I’ve been humbled and no longer have a glass half-empty attitude,” she said. “I now enjoy the beauty of small things in life, like watching the sunset.”

Samantha knows she has a challenging journey ahead, but is grateful for the support of her family, friends and her team of SSM Health caregivers.

“I’m going to live every day like I don’t know what’s going to happen,” she said. “We should all do that.”
