Carbs and weight loss. Day 1.⁣

Sweet potato.⁣

I spent six years convinced this would blow up my blood sugar and stall my weight loss.⁣

I’m also a registered nurse who has maintained her weight since her 50s eating them on repeat.⁣

Here is what the fear of carbs cost me.⁣

6 years of white-knuckling. Avoiding sweet potatoes, “eating “clean,” still ending up in the pantry at 9pm reaching for something I was trying to avoid in the first place.⁣

That is what carb restriction does to a body running on fumes.⁣

It does not protect you from cravings.⁣

It creates them.⁣

Yes, sweet potatoes raise your blood sugar. Carbs do that. That is your body working the way it was designed to. The goal is not zero carbs. It is finding the right amount that works for your body, health, and weight loss goals after 40.⁣

Here is what the research says.⁣

A Stanford study of 600 people found no significant difference in weight loss between low carb and balanced carb groups after a full year. A Cochrane review confirmed it. By 12 to 18 months, the gap disappears entirely. What predicted results was not the carb count. It was consistency.⁣

Sweet potatoes are rich in fiber, complex carbohydrates, potassium, and vitamin A. When you eat the right amount for your body, they keep you full, feed your gut, and support the energy you need to strength train and build the muscle that makes sustainable weight loss after 40 possible.⁣

The portion matters.⁣

Pairing it with protein and moving your matter. ⁣

“I always gain it back. This is just how my body is now.“⁣

If that sounds familiar, keep reading.⁣

Women over 40 navigating the menopause transition, hormonal weight gain, and weight loss plateaus after 40 are not stuck because they ate a sweet potato. They are stuck because no one ever taught them how much works for their body.⁣

That is a carb confusion problem. Not a carb problem.⁣

Comment MACRO below and I will send you my free Women’s 40+ Weight Loss Macro Calculator. Built specifically for women over 40 navigating hormonal shifts, the menopause transition, and years of start-stop dieting.⁣

Find your number. Eat the sweet potato.⁣

25 years.⁣

That’s how long it’s been since my very first Mother’s Day, May 2001, with my tiny blue-eyed baby girl in my arms and absolutely no idea what I was doing.⁣

I just knew I loved her more than I had words for.⁣

Fast forward to today, May 2026, and I’m holding her baby.⁣ I have three grown children.

I still don’t have words. ⁣

Becoming a grandma has a way of doing that to you. It quiets everything else down and makes you realize that the most important thing you ever did, the most lasting thing, wasn’t a job title or a number on a scale or any goal you chased.⁣

It was showing up. Every single day. ⁣
Tired. Happy. Sad. Overwhelmed. Angry. Exhausted. Numb. Overjoyed. Grateful. ⁣I know you know.

I look at these photos and I see three generations of women who figured it out as they went, loved fiercely and kept going even when it was hard.⁣

Legacy.

And then there’s the empty frame still sitting on my dresser. ⁣

A little tarnished silver bear frame, given to me in September 1999 by a sweet nursing coworker when I found out I was pregnant for the first time.⁣

That pregnancy ended in loss. So did the next two.⁣

I’ve kept this frame all these years, empty, and I think I finally understand why.⁣

It’s not a reminder of what I lost. It’s a reminder that I loved them, they were real. and they counted.⁣

Today, on a day that celebrates mothers, I want to make space for every woman carrying something quiet and heavy.⁣

The ones whose arms are empty today.⁣🤍
The ones still waiting.⁣
The ones who have loved babies nobody else got to meet.⁣

You are still a mother in the most real sense of the word. Love doesn’t require a living child to be true.⁣

If that’s you today, I see you. And I’m holding space for you right alongside the joy in these other photos, because both things can be true at the same time.⁣

Grief and gratitude.⁣
Loss and love.⁣
Empty frames and full hearts.⁣

Happy Mother’s Day to every kind of mom. ⁣

💜,⁣
Dana

is your hormones…⁣

but not in the way you think.⁣

You have been told hormones make weight loss impossible after 40. That is not what the research says. ⁣

The research says hormones can change how your body regulates blood sugar and cravings, and most diets are not built to account for that. ⁣

Your hormones are not a life sentence. They are information. ⁣

Once you understand what they are telling you, this starts to make sense.⁣

A 2024 meta-analysis from The Menopause Society, reviewing 17 randomized controlled trials and more than 29,000 participants, found that as estrogen declines during the menopause transition, the body can become less responsive to insulin. When insulin sensitivity drops, blood sugar becomes harder to regulate. Your brain responds by sending urgent signals for quick fuel-carbohydrates /sugar. ⁣

You think it’s just you- you can’t say no or, you are always starting your diet over. ⁣

This is your brain doing its job with less hormonal support than it used to have.⁣

Here is the empowering part. ⁣

You do not need a prescription or a supplement to start shifting this. ⁣

Research consistently shows that diet quality, adequate protein, and stable blood sugar through balanced meals can measurably improve insulin sensitivity. No fancy protocol required.⁣

Most women do the worst possible thing in response to cravings. They restrict carbs entirely. ⁣

A 2021 study published in Nutrients found that dietary restraint was directly linked to uncontrolled eating and emotional eating, and that the restriction came first. The overeating followed. Higher restraint was also specifically associated with obsessive thoughts about forbidden foods. ⁣

Restriction makes the craving louder, not quieter. The guilt tightens the restriction. The cycle repeats.⁣

This is exactly the loop that Diet Different™ is built to interrupt. ⁣

Not by cutting carbs. ⁣

You will discover how to eat in a way that works with your hormones, stabilizes your blood sugar, and stop the craving cycle before it starts.⁣

The one thing GLP-1 medications ⁣

cannot sustain for women over 40 and what has to happen instead.⁣

GLP-1 medications quiet external cravings. ⁣

The pull you feel when you see something on your feed. When you smell something at a party. That part is real, and for some women, incredibly helpful.⁣

GLP-1 medications can reduce emotional eating in the short term. ⁣

Research found that by month twelve, emotional eating scores had returned to baseline even in women still on the medication. Unless the behavioral and mindset work happens alongside it, the pattern underneath never changes.⁣

The loop quiets. It does not close. ⁣

The cravings that show up after a hectic day with the grandkids. After you have managed everyone else’s needs for ten straight hours. After 8PM when the house finally gets quiet and the kitchen/wine is right there. ⁣

The medication was never designed to reach those.⁣

Oxford University researchers published a systematic review in The BMJ in January 2026. They tracked 9,341 people across 37 studies after stopping weight loss medication. ⁣

Projected return to starting weight: as fast as 1.5 years. Not because the medication failed. ⁣

Because the foundation was never built. If you’re on a medication, build your foundation for lasting physical and emotional health results.⁣

You have heard the words cortisol and dopamine everywhere lately. ⁣

Here is what they mean in your body. Chronic stress drives your appetite hormones. ⁣

Unstable blood sugar crashes your motivation and your mood. And without enough protein and two strength training days per week, your muscle mass works against your metabolism every single year after 40. ⁣

These are not abstract concepts. ⁣

They are why Thursday keeps going sideways no matter how good Monday was.⁣

That foundation is what I am teaching Wednesday. ⁣

Whether you are on a GLP-1, considering one, or done with that conversation entirely.⁣

4 wt loss hills

1. Protein is one of the most underused tools in women’s health after 40.⁣

But it is not magic, and “just eat more protein” is not a plan. ⁣

The amount and what you eat with it matters. ⁣

For fat loss after 40, you need enough protein to support lean muscle, fullness, blood sugar stability, and the brain chemistry involved in focus, motivation, and cravings. ⁣

When the amount is too low for your body and your weight loss goals, the 3PM crash can feel louder, especially in peri/menopause, ADHD, or high-stress seasons.⁣

2: Restriction does not get harder with age because you got weaker.⁣

It gets harder because hormones, sleep, and stress are changing. ⁣

Estrogen interacts with brain systems involved in dopamine, attention, mood, and follow-through. ⁣

So when you force weight loss with low calories, skipped meals, and more rules, your brain may push back with more food noise, cravings, and all-or-nothing thinking.⁣

3. The cortisol-craving loop is real, but cortisol is not the villain.⁣

Cortisol is supposed to rise in the morning. ⁣

It helps you wake up and mobilize energy. The issue is when stress, poor sleep, under-eating, caffeine, and restriction keep your system feeling activated. ⁣

When blood sugar feels less steady and dopamine-seeking is louder, cravings for sugar, carbs, salt, or quick relief can feel urgent.⁣

4: GLP-1 medications can be helpful. I am not anti-medication.⁣

Ozempic, Wegovy, Zepbound, and Mounjaro can reduce appetite, food noise, and cravings for many women. But they do not automatically build the habits that protect muscle, support blood sugar, improve sleep, or help you respond to emotional eating and stress cravings. ⁣

Medication may lower the volume, but the foundation still matters.⁣

Sustainable weight loss for women over 40 requires a plan built for your hormones, metabolism, brain, and real life.⁣

I am teaching that foundation on May 6th.⁣

These 3 habits are backfiring….⁣

You are doing what you were told to do. That is why weight loss feels so frustrating.⁣

The habits that worked in your 20s or 30s can start working against you after 40, especially with peri/menopause, ADHD, stress, poor sleep, and blood sugar changes.⁣

That does not mean you have to stay stuck-⁣
you need a strategy built for women 40+⁣

Fasting through the morning may feel like discipline, but for some women over 40 it can add stress to an already sensitive system. ⁣

Cortisol naturally rises in the morning to help you wake up. Add coffee, stress, poor sleep, and no food for hours, and blood sugar can feel harder to keep steady. ⁣

By the time you eat, cravings, low energy, and irritability may be louder.⁣

Cutting calories too low can backfire.⁣

When food is restricted too long, many women notice more hunger, fatigue, cravings, muscle loss, and a slower-feeling metabolism. ⁣

This is where I see most women struggle with overindulgence. ⁣

Sustainable weight loss after 40 is not about eating as little as possible. It is about fueling consistently.⁣

Skipping protein because you are not hungry can make the afternoon feel chaotic. ⁣

Protein supports muscle, fullness, blood sugar stability, and brain chemistry. If you have ADHD or ADHD traits, inconsistent meals can make dopamine-seeking behaviors feel louder. ⁣

That 2PM pantry pull may be your brain and body asking for steadier fuel.⁣

None of this is a discipline failure. It is a mismatch.⁣

Women over 40 do not need more shame or another plan built for a younger body. ⁣

You need to understand what is happening so you can make choices that give you more control.⁣

I am an RN with over 25 years of experience, and I have coached hundreds of women through hormonal weight loss, perimenopause, ADHD cravings, and the all-or-nothing diet cycle.⁣

I am teaching my women’s weight loss over 40 system in a free workshop.⁣
