Carbs and weight loss. Day 1.
Sweet potato.
I spent six years convinced this would blow up my blood sugar and stall my weight loss.
I’m also a registered nurse who has maintained her weight since her 50s eating them on repeat.
Here is what the fear of carbs cost me.
6 years of white-knuckling. Avoiding sweet potatoes, “eating “clean,” still ending up in the pantry at 9pm reaching for something I was trying to avoid in the first place.
That is what carb restriction does to a body running on fumes.
It does not protect you from cravings.
It creates them.
Yes, sweet potatoes raise your blood sugar. Carbs do that. That is your body working the way it was designed to. The goal is not zero carbs. It is finding the right amount that works for your body, health, and weight loss goals after 40.
Here is what the research says.
A Stanford study of 600 people found no significant difference in weight loss between low carb and balanced carb groups after a full year. A Cochrane review confirmed it. By 12 to 18 months, the gap disappears entirely. What predicted results was not the carb count. It was consistency.
Sweet potatoes are rich in fiber, complex carbohydrates, potassium, and vitamin A. When you eat the right amount for your body, they keep you full, feed your gut, and support the energy you need to strength train and build the muscle that makes sustainable weight loss after 40 possible.
The portion matters.
Pairing it with protein and moving your matter.
“I always gain it back. This is just how my body is now.“
If that sounds familiar, keep reading.
Women over 40 navigating the menopause transition, hormonal weight gain, and weight loss plateaus after 40 are not stuck because they ate a sweet potato. They are stuck because no one ever taught them how much works for their body.
That is a carb confusion problem. Not a carb problem.
Comment MACRO below and I will send you my free Women’s 40+ Weight Loss Macro Calculator. Built specifically for women over 40 navigating hormonal shifts, the menopause transition, and years of start-stop dieting.
Find your number. Eat the sweet potato.
