At Home with Ida~

This is the part of caregiving that people don’t talk about enough.

When safety becomes a concern… everything changes.

I recently came across a situation where a family was doing everything they could—removing sharp objects, trying to manage behaviors, asking for help—and still, someone got hurt.

This is not about blame.
This is about understanding what can happen when cognitive changes progress.

Sometimes behaviors can become unpredictable.
Sometimes strength and confusion combine in ways that create real risk.

And in those moments, love alone is no longer enough to keep everyone safe.

💭 If you are caring for a loved one and have experienced:

aggression
sudden behavior changes
safety concerns
fear in your own home

Please hear this:

You are not alone.
And this is not something you are expected to manage by yourself.

There are levels of support designed specifically for situations like this—where safety, structure, and trained care matter.

At Ida’s House, we often meet families at this exact point—when they’ve done everything they can, and it’s simply no longer safe.

Reaching out for help in this moment is not failure.
It is protection.
It is love.
It is the right next step.

📩 If you are unsure what to do, we are here to talk through options with you—confidentially and without pressure.

There’s a quiet kind of grief that comes with caregiving.

It’s the moment you realize
you are exhausted…
and everyone can see it…

but somehow, life just keeps going.

No pause.
No backup.
No real relief.

Just you…
trying to hold everything together.

💭 What many people don’t talk about is this:

Caregiving doesn’t just take physical energy.
It takes emotional strength, mental focus, and constant vigilance.

And over time, even the strongest people start to feel it.

If this is you… please hear this:

You are not failing.
You are not weak.
And you were never meant to do this alone.

Sometimes the most loving decision isn’t to keep pushing…

It’s to allow support in.

At Ida’s House, we meet families in this exact moment—
not with judgment, but with understanding.

You don’t have to figure everything out today.

But you don’t have to carry it all by yourself either.

📩 If you need guidance, feel free to message us privately.

Sundowning in Dementia: A Hard Time for Families

If you care for someone with dementia, you may know this moment all too well: the sun starts to set, and suddenly everything changes.

A loved one who seemed okay earlier may become restless, anxious, confused, or upset. They may pace, repeat questions, or seem afraid for no clear reason. This is called sundowning — and for caregivers, it can be one of the hardest parts of the day.

It can feel heartbreaking to watch someone you love struggle as evening comes. You may feel tired, frustrated, helpless, or even hurt by their behavior. Please remember: this is not intentional. Your loved one is not trying to make life harder. Their brain is simply having a harder time keeping up as the day goes on.

What they need most in those moments is not correction — it’s comfort.

A calm voice.
A familiar routine.
A dim, quiet room.
A gentle hand.
Your patience, even when you’re running low.

Sundowning can be exhausting for caregivers too. If you are walking through this, please be kind to yourself. You are doing the best you can in a very difficult situation.

You may not be able to stop sundowning completely, but your presence matters more than you know. In those moments of fear and confusion, your love can still feel like safety.

At Home with Ida | Ida’s House of Vermont

At Ida’s House of Vermont, we believe that knowledge brings comfort and confidence during life’s most important decisions. Our At Home with Ida posts are designed to provide educational topics and helpful guidance for caregivers and families as they navigate the journey of finding the right home for their loved ones.

Whether your path leads you to Ida’s House or another care setting, our goal is to support our community by sharing insights, answering frequently asked questions, and offering thoughtful guidance every step of the way.

Because finding the right care should never feel overwhelming—you don’t have to do it alone.

We believe that care goes far beyond meeting physical needs—it’s about nurturing the heart, the spirit, and a person’s sense of self. One of the simplest yet most powerful ways we do this is through affirmations.

Affirmations are the kind words, reassurances, and validations we share with our residents every single day. They may seem small in the moment, but their impact is lasting. For someone adjusting to a new home, facing memory loss, or navigating changes in independence, hearing “You matter,” “You’re doing great,” or “We’re here with you” can make all the difference.

For individuals living with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia, affirmations help create a sense of calm and safety. Instead of correcting or challenging, we meet residents where they are—acknowledging their feelings and honoring their experiences. This approach builds trust, reduces anxiety, and helps each person feel understood.

At Ida’s House, affirmations are part of how we create a true home. They guide how we speak, how we listen, and how we care. Every interaction is an opportunity to remind our residents that they are valued, respected, and never alone.

Because exceptional care isn’t just what we do—it’s how we make people feel. 💛

Today, Ida’s House truly became a home ❤️

We welcomed our very first resident, and it was such a humbling experience. To be trusted by a family—to help ease their fears and care for their loved one as if they were our own—means more than words can express.

As I left this evening, I looked back at Ida’s House all lit up, and it really hit me… this dream is now a place where people will live, be cared for, and feel safe and at home.

My heart is full tonight. 🤍

04/26/2026

Sitting on my porch this morning with my coffee, I feel everything all at once—gratitude, excitement, and a whole lot of nerves.

Tomorrow, we welcome our first resident to Ida’s House.

It’s hard to put into words what this moment means after such a long journey. So many late nights, so much planning, second-guessing, hoping, and pushing forward… and now we’re finally here.

I won’t pretend I’m not nervous—I am. I’ve spent over a year pouring my heart into every policy, every detail, just hoping I didn’t miss anything important. Wanting everything to be just right.

But what I keep coming back to is this… we didn’t build this place out of perfection. We built it out of love.

I am surrounded by an incredible team who care deeply, and together we will learn, adjust, and grow. We will show up every day with compassion, patience, and a commitment to do right by the people and families who trust us.

This is why we started.

Tomorrow, Ida’s House becomes a home. ❤️

I’ve been spending time in dementia caregiver support groups lately, and I keep seeing the same conversations over and over again.

Some families are asking,

“When is it time to consider placement?”

But I’m also seeing many families say they are 100% against ever putting their loved one in a facility — no matter what.

Often this comes from love, promises made, or fear of what they’ve seen or heard.

I understand that completely.

Because honestly… I used to feel the same way.

Both personally and professionally, I saw things that stayed with me:

The smell when you walked in
People calling out for help
Residents lined up around the nurses’ station
Overworked staff trying their best but stretched too thin

I remember thinking…

This is not how anyone should live.

And I also remember thinking…

If I ever had the opportunity, I would do it differently.

That’s exactly why I created Ida’s House.

Not a large facility.

Not an institutional setting.

But a small, calm, personalized home.

A place where:

Residents are known and understood
Care is unhurried and personal
The environment is peaceful
Families feel supported, not judged

I also want to gently say this to caregivers:

Being against “facilities” often comes from what we’ve seen in the past.

But not all care environments are the same.

And sometimes love means recognizing when the level of care needed becomes more than one person can safely provide at home.

This is not about giving up.

This is about safety, dignity, and quality of life — for both your loved one and for you.

If you’re struggling with this decision, you are not alone.

There is no perfect time, and there is no one-size-fits-all answer.

But there are options that can feel very different than what you may be picturing.

Today, we had the absolute pleasure of welcoming DJ Marshall from Home Depot to Ida’s House! With the help of DJ, we now have beautiful raised garden beds where our residents can safely grow vegetables and flowers.

Words truly cannot express how grateful we are for his time, kindness, and support. This will bring so much joy and purpose to our residents—thank you, DJ, for making this possible! 🌱
