This is the current status of Covid 19 testing at Branford Hills Health Care Center.

We conducted point prevalence testing on June 1st and June 2nd in accordance with CT DPH protocols. 43 residents were tested; 6 tested positive for COVID-19.
All 6 residents are asymptomatic.

All of the positive residents on BH2 unit have been taken off of precautions effective June 3, following CDC recommendations.

All staff members are in the process of being tested. To date, 111 negative tests have been reported.

We continue to follow all DPH, CDC and CMS Guidelines for infection control, and recently passed another state survey with no negative findings.

Outdoor visitation policy
We will begin outside social distance visits on the Ledgewood patio. Family members will be contacted by the recreation department to set up the visits. All visitors, without exception, will be screened per facility policy and must wear a mask and sit at least 6 feet apart. Visitors will be limited to 2 per family in order to maintain social distancing while allowing the most comfortable visit.

We get many questions about how the virus enters and is transmitted in nursing homes.
Below please find links to the latest information about how the virus has spread in nursing homes.

If you have any concerns, please feel free to call Janet Woxland, Administrator 203-481-6221.

What the Experts are Saying

Public health experts share their professional opinions on why COVID spread in long term care.

Nursing homes fought to keep COVID out of buildings, but experts are saying community spread made it a nearly impossible task in some situations.

Our Covid 19 cases remain unchanged from last week.
We are very optimistic about our progress here at Branford Hills Health Care Center. In large part, this is due to the hard working, amazing, and talented staff.
Their dedication and professionalism and adherence to all infection control policies and procedures have shown proven results. We will continue to be ever vigilant in keeping our residents safe.

Testing Update

The Connecticut Department of Public Health has recommended all nursing homes conduct a point prevalence Covid 19 testing protocol for residents. Our testing will be Monday, June 1st, and repeated Tuesday, June 2nd with guidance from CT DPH and the CDC. The nursing staff will be contacting families of all residents. Staff are also being tested. Any positive tested staff member will not be allowed to return to work until meeting all CDC return to work guidelines.

Resident Communication update
We understand how hard it is not seeing your loved one in person. The recreation staff is working hard at providing weekly FaceTime calls to help you connect with you loved ones. For the safety of all residents, we must await CT DPH guidance before we can safely facilitate in person visits.

Memorial Day
Over the weekend the residents enjoyed ice cream treats from our mobile Good Humor truck, while music played in the hallway.

Please feel free to contact Administrator Janet Woxland, RN with any questions or concerns. You may also reach out to Peggy Welch, RN, DNS or your loved ones social worker at 203-481-6221.

Have a wonderful and safe weekend.

Our COVID 19 cases remain virtually unchanged at his time (see prior post), and many additional residents are asymptomatic and doing well. Residents are cohorted in either positive or negative COVID areas per state recommendations.

The state has now surveyed the facility four separate times with no adverse findings. During this challenging time, our staff members are performing consistently well adhering to all the recommended infection control policies and procedures.

Residents and families are missing each other very much, and we have received questions about reopening to visitors. The short answer is that we do not anticipate that visitors will be allowed for many more weeks. Our understanding is that most nursing homes will not be allowed to open until Connecticut determines that the state has met the third (last) phase of the federal Open Up America Again guidelines. The state will also issue its own set of standards specifically for nursing homes, which must be met and maintained to allow in-person visits. These measures will include additional testing of residents and staff and contact tracing.

We are assisting families and residents with communication by telephone, facetime, Skype, letters, and emails. Please contact us if you have concerns or ideas about staying in contact with your loved ones. 203-481-6221.

Have a great holiday weekend. Stay well, and stay safe.

Update on the current status of Branford Hills Health Care Center:
We currently have 80 residents that have tested positive and 43 negative.
We have 10 residents hospitalized and 9 have returned to our care.
We are encouraged to see that 66 of the 80 positive residents are asymptomatic for the disease and are doing well.
Our recreation department will be in contact with all families to set up a weekly FaceTime call with residents. The goal of the weekly call is to provide needed connections between families and residents due to mandatory visitation restrictions.
We are working closely with the Department of Public health to retest all residents in house. Families will be contacted when the retesting process begins.

This week our health care heroes at BHHCC were recognized by the Branford fire and police departments in conjunction with K and J Tree Removal, honoring us with a parade and an enormous American flag hung on a crane.

BHHCC is continuously working to keep residents and staff safe during this pandemic. Our team is staying informed of the ever-changing information regarding COVID-19.
We want our residents to be safe and wish to be transparent to ensure your sense of confidence in our facility. The residents' care is the most important to us.
Public health authorities have recommended widespread testing of all nursing home residents. BHHCC has completed the testing of all our residents at this time. We currently have 78 positive and 43 negative COVID 19 residents in house. We are encouraged to see that 60 of these 78 positive residents are asymptomatic for the disease. We will be meeting with our medical director and APRNs to discuss new guidance from CT Department of Public Health (DPH) regarding retesting strategies.
Per Governor Ned Lamont's executive order to reinspect nursing homes, we received a second CT Department of Public Health (DPH) survey on Wednesday, April 29. The surveyor was accompanied by three National Guardsman and toured all units and monitored our infection control practices. For the second time, the surveyor exited with no negative findings,
We thank you for your continued understanding and patience regarding our visitation restrictions to keep your fragile loved ones safe. While the state may allow social gatherings and businesses to open on May 20, we expect both the state and the federal government to continue the enforcement of visitation restrictions to protect nursing home residents.
State Representative Robin Comey visited BHHCC on Sunday, May 3, to show her support for our families, staff, and residents. Thank you, Representative Comey!
For Mother's Day, our residents will enjoy service from our rolling tea cart, along with a carnation and poem for each mother.
As always, feel free to contact Janet Woxland, Administrator or Peggy Welch, Director of Nurses at 203-481-6221, or contact the resident's social worker, Alison Savage (BH3 and LW3) or Ellen Leslie (BH2 and LW2).
Stay well, stay safe, and stay inside.

BHHCC is continuously working to keep residents and staff safe during this pandemic. Our team is staying informed of the ever-changing information regarding COVID-19. We want our residents to be safe and wish to be transparent to ensure your sense of confidence in our facility. The residents' care is the most important to us.
BHHCC currently has 71 positive and 36 negative COVID 19 residents. 50 of these 71 positive residents are asymptomatic for the disease. Eight of our residents are hospitalized.
As can be seen, many of our residents have tested positive, and tragically 16 have passed. We wish to express our deepest sympathy to the families of these residents. We are honored that you selected BHHCC to provide care for your loved one.
TESTING ALL RESIDENTS
Widespread testing of all nursing home residents has been recommended by public health authorities, but testing supplies in Connecticut were limited. Now, more tests are available, and BHHCC is testing every resident in the facility. As of today, just ten residents are not yet tested. We will also be re-testing the asymptomatic residents when they reach 28 days since testing positive.
STATE INFECTION CONTROL SURVEY RESULTS
During our COVID-19 infection control survey, a CT Department of Public Health (DPH) surveyor conducted a room to room inspection. She interviewed staff and reviewed all of our infection control policies and procedures. The surveyor stated that BHHCC was following all state and federal guidelines, and the official report indicated the facility is in substantial compliance with all regulations, and no deficiencies were cited.

Family Uses Bucket Truck to Visit

Some family members got creative and hired a bucket truck to make happy visits to loved ones on our upper floors.
One resident's husband surprised her on April 27th for her birthday. Another family visited their mom and grandmother on Sunday, April 26th. See photos below.

THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING OUR WORKERS
We continue to ask for your support of our very courageous, loyal, and hard-working staff that report to work under these most difficult circumstances. We have staff members out sick that have tested positive and a nurse that is currently hospitalized.
Please think about these brave people that are fighting a war against an invisible and sometimes deadly enemy. We are all in their debt.
As always, feel free to contact Janet Woxland, Administrator or Peggy Welch, Director of Nurses at 203-481-6221, or contact the resident's social worker, Alison Savage (BH3 and LW3) or Ellen Leslie (BH2 and LW2.) We are guardedly optimistic that infection rates may soon decline but will remain vigilant, protecting and caring for our residents.
Stay well, stay safe, and stay inside.
