In Loving Memory of Dr. Anna Tirado
It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Dr. Anna Tirado.
Anna was a cherished physician at County OB/GYN for 25 years. A graduate of the Sophie Davis Center for Biomedical Education at the City College of New York and New York Medical College, Anna was a kind soul and a compassionate physician whose spirit lit up every room she entered.
Her devotion to her patients was unparalleled. She believed every visit should be an opportunity for learning and care, taking the time to teach each woman about her body, her health, and her well-being. Her patients knew appointments with her would run late, but they never minded—because they came to see Anna for the thoughtful, personal care only she could provide.
In 1990, Anna was diagnosed with Leukemia and had a successful bone marrow transplant, however, her physical mobility to work full time was permanently limited. She devoted her time to numerous charities and serving the community. For many summers, she was the Medical Director at a camp for families affected by AIDS. She made many trips to Israel with March of the Living as one of the Medical Staff personnel for high schoolers on their pilgrimage to learn about the Holocaust. But her lifelong passion was improving healthcare for women with disabilities. She became a tireless advocate, ensuring their care was no less than exemplary. Beginning in 2000, she welcomed women confined to a wheelchair to her practice, soon recognizing these visits required more time, space, and resources. She went on to establish the Women’s Clinic at Ga***rd Rehabilitation Hospital, where she volunteered her time until her retirement in 2022. For her dedication, Anna was honored in 2019 with Ga***rd’s Healthcare Hero Award and a Community Service Award recognizing her profound impact on women.
There are not enough words to capture the joy Anna found in dancing, laughter, conversation, and celebrating her Puerto Rican heritage—her culture, her food, and her people. Her spirit will continue to live on in the countless lives she touched.
Anna leaves behind her life partner Henriette, her father, and a large, loving family of sisters, nieces, and nephews, as well as devoted colleagues and friends, including Drs. Lili Plisic and Helen Lope de Haro.
A celebration of life will be held this summer—just as Anna wished—filled with dancing, stories, and joyful memories.
Please feel free to share a memory for her family and friends in the comments. Cards for her family may be sent to County OB, 103 N. Main, Branford, CT 06405.
