A Nurse's Week Message,
This will be my 18th year as a nurse and 12th as a nurse practitioner and 8th as a nurse business owner.
Some one asked me recently if we wanted to be on a list publicly for providing gender affirming care, because so many practices are going under the radar in the current climate. I said hell yes I want to be on a list. I will not go under the radar. Because in darkness hatred thrives.
My day to day as a nurse has come a long way from the chaos of the emergency department to a more controlled chaos of outpatient mental health. But I wouldn't change it for anything, this week I was able to give a Vivitrol injection, do a Spravato administration in office, and swear an affidavit for a gender marker change- so I'm not bored! Nurses have been radical and justice oriented since their inception. And what angers me is that affirmative care for ALL should NOT be radical. But here we are.
I will continue on as one of the radical nurses whose favorite patients are those being told by society to be less visible...be less. B/c I'm going to support them as they become more. That has been and will always be the mission of Serenity Wellness and shout out to any one who throws their lot in and works here because something I have to say at every job interview is we do get hate mail, we do receive threats, we have been cyber stalked by transphobic people. People who do this work make the choice every day to take a risk and that matters.
I hope all nurses get something more than a water bottle and pizza as recognition for the kick ass work we do every day. And thank you as always for trusting us with your mental health.
~Meredith, a nurse
