"The science is clear. Vaccines remain one of the most powerful tools in modern medicine, with the benefits far outweighing risks."

Read this personal reflection from Brattleboro Retreat staff psychiatrist and pediatrician Dr. William A. Knorr, who recalls growing up in an era when Polio shaped everyday life, when children adapted to lasting disabilities, and fear was part of every family’s reality. He also remembers the turning point: April 12, 1955, when Jonas Salk’s vaccine was declared safe and effective, transforming public health almost overnight.

Can a game of Dungeons & Dragons become a powerful tool for therapy?

In this episode of Unravelling, hosts Mary Wilson and Kurt White explore how tabletop role-playing games are being used in group psychotherapy to help people experiment with new ways of relating, build emotional awareness, and imagine different futures for themselves.

They’re joined by Dr. Vincent Dehili, a licensed psychologist and group therapy specialist, and E. Merten, a clinical social worker and educator. Together, they introduce Collaborative Role-Playing Integrative Therapy (CRIT), an approach that blends the structure of D&D with the goals of process-oriented group therapy.

Through character creation, shared storytelling, and even in-game “failure,” this conversation reveals how fantasy worlds can open up very real possibilities for growth, flexibility, and self-compassion.

Our thanks to Mercedes de Guardiola, who joined us as a Grand Rounds presenter for a hybrid in-person and remote audience. Her talk explored how the pseudoscience of eugenics shaped Vermont public policy in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, leading to state-sanctioned institutionalization, sterilization, and family separation that targeted some of the state’s most vulnerable residents. Looking at developments from poor farms and other public institutions, her work sheds light on a difficult chapter in history and why understanding it still matters today.

When our nursing team learned of the recent critical blood shortage reported in the news, they quickly partnered with the American Red Cross to host a two-day blood drive right here on campus.

The response from Retreat employees was outstanding: 129 appointments were scheduled, with 83 units of blood successfully donated over the course of the drive. Fifteen staff members volunteered their time to help ensure the event ran smoothly, and nine employees generously donated raffle prizes to encourage and thank donors.

A big thank you to the American Red Cross and to our incredible staff for once again stepping up with compassion and care when it was needed most.

Bipolar disorder is often reduced to “mood swings,” but the reality is much more complex and often misunderstood.

In this episode of Unravelling, Kurt White talks with Matt Dove, PMHNP-BC, FNP-C, about what bipolar disorder really looks like, including depression, mania, and hypomania, and how it can affect sleep, energy, relationships, and daily life.

They discuss why bipolar disorder is frequently misdiagnosed, how symptoms can overlap with other mental health conditions, and why it can take years for people to receive the right diagnosis. The conversation also explores what helps, including mood stabilizing medications, the importance of sleep, therapy, and supportive relationships.

Bipolar disorder is treatable. Many people living with it build stable, meaningful lives, and recovery is possible.

Women’s contributions to science, medicine, and society have shaped the world we live in, yet many of those stories were erased, overlooked, or credited to others.

In this reflection, Brattleboro Retreat Senior Program Therapist Susan Fields, LICSW, explores how historical power structures shaped the way women’s achievements were recorded and why recognition and validation matter not just historically, but for mental health and well-being today.

The article also highlights several women whose groundbreaking work changed history but whose names were largely left out of the story.

It's , a day dedicated to raising awareness, reducing stigma, and honoring the strength and resilience of those living with bipolar disorder.

World Bipolar Day is recognized on March 30th, the birthday of famous Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh, who was diagnosed after his death as likely having bipolar disorder.

Bipolar disorder is often misunderstood as simply “mood swings,” but it is far more complex, affecting energy, sleep, cognition, and daily functioning. Too often, people go years without an accurate diagnosis.

In the next episode of Unravelling (airing 4/8), psychiatric nurse practitioner Matt Dove joins us to talk about what bipolar disorder really is, beyond stereotypes, and the hope that treatment and understanding can bring.

Our thanks to Dr. Nnamdi Pole for presenting our latest Grand Rounds, “American Psychological Association Guidelines for Treating Adult PTSD: An Insider’s View.” With strong attendance both in person and remotely, the session offered valuable insight into the updated APA guidelines, the development process behind them, and thoughtful guidance on applying them in the broader context of evidence-based practice.
