Early transfer of complex wound patients to settings with high-quality wound care can help reduce length of stay, readmissions, and care costs. Kindred Hospitals, which provides specialized acute care for medically complex patients, offers an advanced wound care program built on patient-centeredness, formal wound care training, team-based treatment, and standard protocols. These characteristics make Kindred a high-quality care setting for complex wound patients.

As patients age and develop an increasing number of comorbidities, including diabetes and obesity, they are more prone to developing wounds and to experiencing longer, more complex recoveries.[1] Chronic wound patients also often experience psychological side effects such as loneliness and depressio...

Before her hospitalization, Deanna lived an independent and active life. But that changed abruptly after a complex medical episode involving respiratory failure, NSTEMI, myasthenia gravis, congestive heart failure, and the placement of a pacemaker. Following more than a month at Providence Mission Hospital, Deanna was transferred to Kindred Hospital Brea for advanced respiratory support and continued nursing care due to severe deconditioning.

Upon arrival, Deanna faced significant challenges. She was unable to communicate her needs, required a minced and moist diet for safety, was fully dependent on nursing care, and needed maximum assistance from two caregivers for transfers. She was also non-ambulatory.

Despite the obstacles, Deanna’s determination and the compassionate expertise of her care team helped her begin a steady path to recovery. She was gradually weaned from the ventilator and eventually decannulated. As her condition stabilized, she transitioned to an easy-to-chew diet and started regaining her strength.

With time and therapy, Deanna achieved meaningful milestones: she was able to walk up to 250 feet with a front-wheeled walker and navigate four steps with contact guard assistance. Her mobility, independence, and confidence grew with each passing day.

On February 17, 2025, Deanna was safely discharged to an Acute Rehabilitation Unit (ARU), where she would continue her recovery journey, one step closer to regaining her independence.
Deanna’s story is a powerful reminder of what’s possible through expert care, perseverance, and the support of a dedicated team.

Evelyn was admitted to Saddleback Hospital for advancing pulmonary fibrosis before being transferred to UC San Diego to be evaluated for lung transplantation. While there, she underwent a tracheostomy placement and was then sent back to Saddleback Hospital.

Upon her admission to Kindred Hospital Brea, Evelyn required tube feedings for nutrition and was dependent on moderate assistance for toilet transfers. Her ability to ambulate was severely limited and she needed substantial support for basic activities.

Despite these obstacles, Evelyn's journey to recovery was nothing short of inspiring. Our dedicated team, including respiratory specialists, rehabilitation professionals, and nursing staff, worked collaboratively to provide Evelyn with the comprehensive care she needed. Throughout her stay, Evelyn made remarkable progress. Under the guidance of our team, she successfully weaned off the tracheostomy tube and was decannulated. Her voice remained intact, and she passed her swallow study, allowing her to transition to a regular diet.

After two weeks, Evelyn’s condition had improved significantly, and she was safely discharged to a Skilled Nursing Facility for continued recovery. Evelyn’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance, expert care and a strong support team.

Upon admission to Kindred Hospital Brea, Alice had multiple complex medical conditions, including respiratory failure secondary to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), septic emboli, acute kidney injury requiring hemodialysis, and metabolic encephalopathy.

Alice was admitted following a prolonged ICU stay where she underwent emergency hysterectomy due to hemorrhagic shock, with complications including toxic shock syndrome and chorioamnionitis.

Initially, Alice was unable to communicate, was bed-bound, and required tube feeding. Her care plan included aggressive respiratory management, ventilatory weaning, and a comprehensive rehabilitation program.

Over the course of her stay at Kindred Hospital Brea, Alice demonstrated remarkable progress under the guidance of our interdisciplinary care team. She was gradually weaned off the ventilator, successfully decannulated, and transitioned from tube feeding to tolerating an easy-to-chew diet. By the time of her discharge, Alice was CGA (contact guard assist) in bed mobility and required minimal assistance for transfers. Her voice returned to baseline, and she was actively participating in her care.

After two months, she was safely discharged to an acute rehab facility (ARU) for continued recovery.
