🌿 Navigating Differences in White Space
A Parent Workshop for Adoptive Families Raising BIPOC Youth (Ages 12–18)
📅 April 25, 2026
⏰ 10:30 AM – 1:30 PM PST
📍 In Person Location:
Wellness Counseling Inc.
755 Winslow Way E.
Bainbridge Island, WA 98110
💻 Also available online via Zoom
Adoptive parents raising BIPOC youth in predominantly white spaces often face complex and important conversations about identity, race, belonging, and love. This workshop is designed to support parents in building the confidence and skills to engage in these conversations with honesty, cultural responsiveness, and emotional connection—without avoidance, minimization, or defensiveness.
We will explore how BIPOC adoptees can experience racialized stress that parents may not always see, particularly during key identity-forming years. Participants will gain tools and frameworks to help strengthen connection and deepen understanding within their families.
✨ What you’ll learn:
• How to lean into differences rather than shy away from them
• The Three C’s Framework: Communication, Connection, and Culture
• Practical tools for navigating race, adoption, and identity conversations
• Skills to repair relational ruptures and deepen connection
• How thoughts, feelings, and behaviors influence meaning-making
🎤 Special Guest:
Nyasha Jackson, Restorative Care Solutions, LLC will lead a section on Restorative Conversations & Repair, offering practical approaches to addressing conflict, restoring trust, and strengthening relationships within families.
👩🏾‍⚕️ Hosted by Wellness Counseling Inc.
Facilitated by Samantha Manaway, LMFTA, supervised by Arilda Surridge, LMFT – Owner of Wellness Counseling Inc.
Led by two African-American women—one grounded in family systems therapy and the other in restorative, trauma-informed practice—this workshop offers both clinical depth and relational insight while modeling how to hold complex conversations with care.
👥 Attendance Options:
• In person (limited to 10 participants)
• Online via Zoom
✨ If you’re raising a BIPOC youth and want tools to strengthen connection, navigate identity conversations, and support your child’s lived experience, this workshop is for you.

Learning to Be Heard Without Raising Your Voice

It often starts in the kitchen, a tired parent asking for the third time, and a child who seems to hear nothing at all.

The voice gets louder, frustration builds, and suddenly everyone feels dysregulated.

But yelling usually isn’t about discipline, it’s about a disconnect.

Children listen best when they feel seen, not shouted at.

Pausing to move closer, making eye contact, and saying their name can shift the moment.

A calm, steady tone tells a child their nervous system is safe enough to listen.

Short, clear directions land better than rapid-fire instructions.

When feelings are named first, resistance often softens.

Offering simple choices helps a child feel capable instead of controlled.

Over time, calm consistency builds trust and cooperation.

Connection, not volume, is what teaches children how to listen.
