Mayor Wheeler Provides Statement on the Passing of Legendary Quincy Jones

Message from Mayor Wheeler: We were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Quincy Jones, a titan in the world of music and entertainment. His monumental contributions, support of talented artists, philanthropy, and his love of music have left an enduring mark on our culture and the people inspired by his genius and body of work. We send our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Quincy Jones.

As a community, we are honored to pay tribute to Mr. Jones and his incredible life and career with the development of the Quincy Square project on 4th Street in downtown Bremerton, which will provide a public plaza for music, arts and cultural activities to connect and inspire all ages.

Mr. Jones discovered his love of music after playing a piano as a youth for the first time in an armory in Bremerton, which changed his life. From that day onward, he learned to play many instruments and would go on to be involved in many facets of music and entertainment.

As part of the Quincy Square project, Mr. Jones’ portrait has been painted on a large mural on the side of the City’s parking garage on 4th Street and a public sculpture of his likeness will be installed along with construction of Quincy Square, which is anticipated to be completed in mid-2025.

We are proud that Quincy Square will be a place that will highlight Mr. Jones’ discovery and love of music and will support his remarkable legacy.
