Before I say more—NO, electrolytes do not directly give you energy.

Calories from protein, carbs, and fat do that. (And yes—alcohol too, though not the kind of “energy” you want for performance).

But here’s where it gets interesting ⬇️

Electrolytes do play a critical role in unlocking and delivering that energy. They regulate hydration, muscle contraction, and blood flow—helping your body actually use the energy from food.

That means if your electrolyte balance is off, your performance (and recovery) will be too.

I teamed up with fellow sports dietitians and with in this article to break down the facts vs. the hype.

Electrolytes aren’t just in sports drinks—they’re also found in foods. But for endurance athletes, electrolyte products are often an essential part of a smart fueling + hydration plan.

I’ve been reading ’s Outlive on and off, and some (or many) statements just make me say—YES!

While Dr. Attia isn’t a proclaimed functional or integrative practitioner, I love his emphasis on longevity, distinction between lifespan and healthspan, and nuance. CONTEXT IS KING.

Regarding longevity…the goal isn’t to live forever. The goal is to live longer with better quality of life.

🥚 Protein spotlight: Egg whites

I recently shared my take in Health on Egg White Protein Powder—a simple product with just two ingredients: egg whites + sunflower lecithin.

No additives, fillers, or sweeteners. 🙌

Why I like it:
✅ Complete protein that’s low in carbs + calories (though I don’t actively promote ‘low carb/low calorie’ or ‘weight management’ messaging)
✅ Dairy- and gluten-free (great for allergies + intolerances)
✅ A clean option for those avoiding traditional powders with fillers

💡 What is sunflower lecithin? It’s a “blender” in food products, and it provides phospholipids + essential fatty acids that support:

🧠 Brain health
🫀 Heart health
🙂 Gut barrier + digestion
📈 Nutrient absorption

⚠️ One note: this product isn’t , so drug-tested athletes should always double-check supplement safety. (It’s labeled as a food with a Nutrition Facts label, but protein powders should be considered supplements for competitive athletes.)

YES—absolutely! Egg white protein can be a helpful boost when you need extra protein without extras.

Week 1 October 12th- Fuel for Power & Endurance
What to eat before, during, and after volleyball for energy and recovery.

Week 2 October 19th - Hydration & Electrolytes
Staying hydrated for optimal performance and preventing cramps.

Week 3 October 26th- Game Day & Tournament Fueling
Planning ahead for long days of play.

All presentations will be held at St. Paul's Fellowship Hall in Brenham, 4:00-5:00

I recently “hit a wall” with regular posting—but behind the scenes, life and business have been full speed ahead.

It’s certainly a good idea to have a fueling and hydration plan for long-distance races—but also build in flexibility.

Fluid and energy needs are dynamic, and race does not always go as planned. 🥴

On the big day, factors such as your pace, weather, and how you feel will influence your actual needs.

💡 PRO TIP: Start by following your plan, but adjust your intake according to how you feel as the race progresses.

The Great Divide Mountain Bike Route (GDMBR)—fueled with confidence.

Steve is a seasoned cyclist and a masters athlete. He is certainly elite in terms of this accomplishment—but not your typical elite athlete profile.
