When I say therapy should be functional…this is what I mean. Real life scenarios and situations are the best teaching tools. Bonus I got to cook dinner WHILE doing a therapy session!

Anyone else find that the word “something” is such a hard word to target medial /th/ with?! So many of my clients do great with medial /th/ until they say “something”. Here’s how I cued my client virtually…auditory cues, slow and overemphasized modeling, gestural cue with my hands, visual cues with my mouth. I also am coaching her through the motor planning needed to produce this word. Alllll the cues for this one!

I would choose a session that looks like this over a session where I have to repeat “come back to the table” 50x any day. I didn’t have to prompt her or motivate her to do the “work”. She picked the activity out of my bag. She responded well to my positive praise and we targeted several goals during this fun activity. Therapy should be fun and positive and motivating for kids and for us therapists!

Joint attention does not always mean eye contact. This is a very common misconception and can be harmful especially for our clients with autism who do not make frequent eye contact. Some autistic adults have even stated that eye contact can feel “painful” or that it’s easier for them to pay attention when not making eye contact. Our goal should always be joint attention and joint engagement, NOT EYE CONTACT. Joint attention skills are a KEY foundational skill for language and learning to communicate. Do not skip this very important Prelinguistic skill!

Big difference between a child communicating spontaneously/through imitation and communicating because they were told to. One is true meaningful communication and the other is following a command. Big difference.

Such a chaotic video 😂 this client has a phonological speech sound disorder. We started using the cycles approach. Now we have some articulation errors to correct. We are no longer stopping for /sh/ but we are over generalizing /s/ for all our long sounds. Once I got the /sh/ in isolation I switched to minimal pairs to really illustrate and distinguish the difference between the two sounds. I also had her discriminate between my productions which was extremely helpful.
