Do you have a teen heading off to college? Let’s make sure they are up-to-date with their vaccinations and screenings.

Most college students need to be up-to-date on the meningitis vaccine as well as the tetanus booster. Some colleges will require a TB skin test prior to staying in college living spaces as well.

Wellness visits are a great opportunity to discuss what things will be needed for your teen heading to college. Call today to schedule an appointment.

Do you have a pool or live near water?

Here are some things you need to know to keep your toddler safe around water:
- Never leave them unattended around water (including the bathtub).
- Use approved life jackets when in a body of water, not just a floatie.
- Teach water safety and enroll in swimming lessons as early as possible.

The U.S. Coast Guard provides guidelines and lists life jackets that are approved for use. Check their site for the latest information on safety standards.

Am I overfeeding my newborn?

Newborns love to eat and often overfeed if not given a limit. Signs of overfeeding include an increased spitting up and/or rapid weight gain.

In the first few weeks of life, a newborn will typically need 2-2.5 ounces per feed or to breastfeed 20-30 minutes. All newborns should be taken to their scheduled appointments with their provider so their weight can be assessed.

Newborns should be seen within 48 hours of being discharged from the hospital and then typically again around 10-14 days of age unless your provider recommends differently.

If you are concerned your newborn is eating too much or not enough, call our office today to schedule a weight check.

Do you know how much screen time your school age child gets per day?

Screens are everywhere these days and it is often a challenge for parents to monitor how much time is being spent.

Too much screen time for school-age children can lead to issues like eye strain, disrupted sleep patterns, and reduced physical activity, which may impact their overall health. It can also affect their social skills, attention span, and academic performance, as excessive screen use can interfere with other important activities like reading or interacting with family.

For children ages 6-12, we recommend keeping screen time to around 2 hours a day for a healthy balance of activities. Turning off screens at least an hour before bedtime helps them unwind and sleep better. For a restful night, it's also a good idea to ensure screens are put away after parents go to bed.

There are so many fun screen-free ways to wind down before bed such as read together, do puzzles, or let your child get creative with drawing, journaling, or building a cozy fort. You can also try gentle stretching or play simple games like memory or cards to help them relax and prepare for sleep.

Do you need help navigating screen time with your school age child? Your child’s provider can offer some tips at your next visit.

Kid-sized humans typically need ½ ounce of sunscreen to cover their bodies while adult-sized kids and teens will need double that - 1 ounce.

Put into other terms, kids need a tablespoon of sunscreen to cover their bodies. So think about the measuring spoon in your kitchen drawer to ensure your little one is adequately protected.

For your bigger kiddos and teens, they’ll need double that, or two tablespoons, which also happens to be about enough to fill a golf ball.

Bottom line - don’t skimp when it comes to protecting your kids with sunscreen. And remember, reapply every 90 minutes and after playing in the water or sweating heavily.

Have sunscreen questions? We have answers. Our providers are ready to help you navigate your child’s specific needs. Give us a call!

Molluscum Contagiousum: What every parent should know.

Molluscum contagiosum is a common viral skin infection, especially in children, that causes small, raised, round bumps on the skin. The condition is typically harmless and will go away without any treatment. The downside to this bumpy rash is that it can linger for 15-36 months. Once a lesion pops up, typically another lesion is developing too. Each lesion typically stays on the skin for 3-6 months, but the entire process can take up to 3 years before your child is bump-free.

Molluscum can be spread to others by direct skin-to-skin contact, or by sharing personal items like towels, razors, or sports equipment.

While most cases of molluscum resolve without any treatment, the pediatric experts at Brentwood Pediatric Care can help you confirm the cause of your child’s pesky bumps and discuss if any treatment is necessary. Call us today for a rash evaluation appointment.

How many wet diapers should my newborn have each day?

- 1-2 days old: At least 1 wet diaper per day of life.

- 3-5 days old: 3-4 wet diapers a day.

- 6+ days old: 6 or more wet diapers per day.

During these first few months you might feel like it is raining diapers at your house, but remember lots of wet diapers = happy, healthy baby.

Remember, we are here to answer any questions you might have about your new bundle of joy.

Got red eyes?

Pink eye (conjunctivitis) is a common presenting symptom here at Brentwood Pediatric Care, but not all pink eye cases are contagious.

Bacterial - very red eyes with thick, mucus discharge. Contagious and require antibiotic drops.

Viral - pink to mild red eyes with minimal discharge. Often crusty lashes in the mornings or after a nap. Think of this one as a cold in the eyes. It typically accompanies an upper respiratory cold. No drops are needed. It’s the most common type of pink eye.

Allergic - Itchy, watery, mildly pink eyes. This type is commonly seen during allergy seasons. Allergy eye drops can be used for relief.

Irritant - Pink/red eyes, but often no discharge noted. Commonly seen after a child gets soap in their eyes or after swimming in the pool (chlorine). No drops typically needed.

Unsure if your child has the contagious type of pink eye?

Call our office to schedule a virtual or in office appointment to see one of our providers.
