If you know a family that is struggling with caring for a loved one with dementia, please reach out to them and see if there's any way that you can be of service to them. A loved one with dementia is one of the greatest challenges that a family could ever. face, and doesn't end of life Doula it is also been one of my greatest challenges as I work with my patients and their families that are struggling with dementia.

To see your loved one slowly revert back to their childhood , losing most of their lifetime memories is difficult . Even more challenging, dementia will steal away familial relationships as a wife will no longer recognize her husband or even remember that she was happily married together for over 70 years. Dementia breaks even the mother's loving bond to her children, as she does not know who they are and may even feel that they are trying to harm her instead of helping her. Dementia causes hallucinations that Bend space and time and Alters a loved one's reality, to the point they are no longer able to function in almost all capacities and thus causes a a failure to thrive and terminal decline over years requiring 24/7 care to be paid for by the family.

So please, whatever you can do to help a family who cares for a loved one with dementia, please not only offer but please also help. Do some grocery shopping, run a few errands, cook a meal, lend a hand, spend some time at the home so the family member caring for them can rest, and most of all, enjoy time spent with a loved one suffering from dementia and listen and enjoy their stories today while they still have them. Tomorrow, that story may not exist.
