Before & After Transformation with traditional teen metal braces and palate expansion. A Brentwood, TN child braces rockstar patient!

The key here is to make the upper jaw wider so we have room for the teeth, and go after the root problem causing the bad bite.

As any orthodontist knows- this type of case can be tricky with the open bite. However, if you follow the guidance of the treatment directions- you can achieve things like this. A picture is proof that it works.

Early treatment of a crossbite.

This “underbite” is caused by two different factors. #1 being the positions of his teeth (upper crowding & lower spacing) and #2 a slight postural issue with the lower jaw that causes someone to bite in a more forward position.

The fix is just a straight forward treatment with braces to straighten the teeth and a little rubber bands to help guide the jaw into the spot it should be in.

Why fix this before all the permanent teeth come in? Because we don’t want damage to the teeth while waiting for a fully permanent dentition. The potential damage can include gum issues in the lower teeth and excessive wear in the upper teeth- among other things. All due to the poor bite.

This treatment is also known as “phase I” or “interceptive orthodontics”.

Case of the day. Traditional braces were used for this correction.

The back story here: there were two missing lower lateral incisors here- but not really enough room for replacement. We decided to close up the space to avoid additional dental work in this situation. This is not always the case where we will do this, but I believe here it is the right plan!

Clarity Aligners.

This case shows nice closure of the open bite. An open bite is where your front teeth do not touch. The bite is said to be “open” because there is space between the teeth since they don’t touch when biting down fully.

Small open bites like this tend to treat out well with aligner treatment. Not only are clear aligners an aesthetic option, they work well to get the job done.
