We know that lots of you are still without power, and we’re hoping you’re safe and warm. The clinic will be open for abbreviated hours tomorrow (Tuesday, 1/27) for sick appointments only. Please call to schedule an appointment. We’re planning to return to our normal business hours on Wednesday, 1/28.

ByHeart Formula Recall: What Parents Need to Know
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Health officials have been investigating cases of infant botulism possibly linked to ByHeart formula. There are 15 infants in 12 states that have been diagnosed with infant botulism who were fed this formula. At this time, the source of contamination is unconfirmed.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
ByHeart has recalled all of their infant formula. If you have any of their formula, immediately stop giving it to your baby! You can switch to a different type of formula with similar components. Please clean and sanitize all items and surfaces that may have touched the formula with hot soapy water or by using the dishwasher.

When should I be worried that my baby possibly has botulism?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Signs and symptoms of infant botulism include constipation (the usual first sign), weak sucking and difficulty feeding, droopy eyelids, weak cry, decreased facial movement, difficulty swallowing, loss of head control, and floppy arms and legs. These symptoms can take weeks to develop and worsen over time. If your baby is displaying any of these signs, please call your pediatrician!

Halloween is so much fun, but it is important to be safe! When trick-or-treating, make sure a parent is going with younger children, and older children are walking in a group. Always check before crossing the street, especially when it’s dark! 🎃 👻
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Make sure to look through all the treats! Throw away any candy that has been opened. Be aware of any choking hazards: babies and toddler should not have hard or gummy candies, anything with whole nuts, or anything sticky like caramels. Ration candy for the next couple of days and weeks; too much candy can cause a stomach ache! 🍭🍫🍬

Is my baby ready to start solids? 👶🏻 🍽️

We recommend starting solids when your baby is sitting upright, unsupported in a tripod position. This usually occurs at 5-6 months old.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
How do I introduce common allergens? 🥜 🍳 🦐 🥛 🌾 🐟
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We recommend introducing common allergen foods (nuts, eggs, dairy, wheat, sesame, soy, fish, and shellfish) as soon as babies start solids. This can help reduce the risk of future allergies! With any new foods, monitor for signs of an allergic reaction: rash/hives, swelling, wheezing, coughing, vomiting, diarrhea, trouble swallowing, or excessive crying. With any concerns, please call our office or call 911 in an emergency.
