3 out of 5 non-organic apples tested by the USDA still carry residues of diphenylamine—a chemical sprayed on apples after harvest to prevent browning.

🔎 Key findings from the Environmental Working Group (EWG):
✔ Diphenylamine was detected on 60% of non-organic apples in 2023.
✔ It’s one of the most common pesticide residues found on apples.
✔ The EU banned diphenylamine in 2012 over concerns it may form cancer-causing nitrosamines.
✔ USDA tests also found residues from 44 different pesticides on conventional apples.

🍏 What you can do:

Choose organic apples, pears, juice, and applesauce when possible.

Wash thoroughly (baking soda + water may be more effective than water alone).

Peel apples to reduce residues (though you’ll lose some fiber + vitamins).
