The Covering House

Restoring the lives of sexually trafficked youth in the U.S. The Covering House is a therapeutic recovery program for youth who have been sexually trafficked.

Our COVER Care™ program is being licensed and copyrighted as an evidence-based program for national distribution. The program integrates specialized therapies (horticulture, equine, culinary, and arts/expressions) with experiential learning, individual and group therapy, sensory diet, and a full in-house, trauma-informed education program designed to meet the physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional needs of survivors. Since 2009, The Covering House has served 440+ children and teens and educated 11,000+ at-risk youth on trafficking red flags and self-protective behaviors.

Most kids think it is just a picture, but s*xtortion is real. That is where a perpetrator will threaten to take those images and sell them or send them to others to get s*xual favor out of the sender. Kids who don't have strong friend groups, or do not have high self worth are more likely to share images that could get them attention, even if the attention is not good. Talk to your kids about the dangers of sharing explicit images. If you or a loved one has been affected by s*xtortion, don't be afraid to reach out. Help is possible.

We have several clients who love bugs and critters. They create moments of excitement and impromptu activities.

The other day, the clients were excited to find several types of critters around the home. A praying mantis appeared at the window at breakfast, which started a spontaneous bug collecting time outside. A baby snake found its way in and was released back outside but only after some handling. After lunch, a beautiful orange swallowtail caterpillar was found. It is always exciting to find things the clients love. We are now studying about different types of bugs.

The 6th Annual F3 Activity Challenge begins TOMORROW!

We kicked off the challenge with two guest speakers on the front lines of this battle against human trafficking in STL. Thank you to Keaton Strong, former St. Louis City Detective and The Covering House Board Member, and Betsy Papin, CSEC Coordinator with The Child Advocacy Center of Northeast MO.

A few points from Keaton and Betsy:
-Talk to your kids about what to do if someone they don't know messages them online (perpetrators use video games and other means to meet kids).
-If your kids are using the internet in any capacity, it's time to talk to them about online safety.
-Sextortion is real, and teenage boys are the most vulnerable.
-To the men of F3 St. Louis, thank you for being in this fight. When we give talks, the audience usually consists of women and mothers. We need more men and fathers fighting against this horrific crime.

Know your kids, set limits, ask questions.
Our children are not with us 24/7, and when we are not there, others may be lurking and prying. Know the apps your children use, set boundaries, ask about what goes on and who they are talking to. We provide internet safety and other programs to help educate both children and parents of the dangers out there and the red flags to look at for.
