Formed in 1948, the Tennessee Academy of Family Physicians exists to support and advocate for Tennessee family physicians as leaders and providers of quality, comprehensive, patient-centered medical care. The Tennessee Academy of Family Physicians (TNAFP) is the medical specialty association with a membership of 2,600 family physicians, family medicine residents and medical students throughout Tennessee. The Tennessee AFP is a state chapter of the American Academy of Family Physicians representing more than 100,000 members nationwide and headquartered in Leawood, Kansas. The family physician provides comprehensive, coordinated and continuing care to all members of the family and serves as the patient's advocate in the changing health care system. In addition to providing continuing and comprehensive care, family physicians provide health maintenance and preventive services to each member of the family, regardless of sex, age or type of problem, be it biological, behavioral or social. And, because of their focus on prevention and primary care, they are able to treat illnesses early and when necessary refer to appropriate sub-specialists.
