Emergency preparedness includes our pets! Keep pet carriers accessible near exits, include pets in evacuation plans, and consider pet alert stickers for windows.

For apartment dwellers: know which exits allow pets during emergencies.

Most importantly — if you're safely out, don't go back for pets. Contact emergency responders instead.

Forget everything you've heard about removing ticks with petroleum jelly, burning, or twisting — those old tales can make things worse!

Here's what actually works: fine-tipped tweezers, grabbing as close to the skin as possible, and pulling straight up with steady pressure. No twisting!

Bring us any embedded ticks you're uncomfortable removing. What's your tick horror story?

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Epping Police Department

EPPING, NH — On Thursday, June 19, 2025, at approximately 3:00p.m., during a routine training session, Epping Police K-9 Officer Abele and her partner, K-9 Benjamin, encountered an unexpected and serious medical emergency.

Without hesitation, Officer Abele recognized the critical signs of distress in K-9 Benjamin and sprang into action—demonstrating the swift decision-making and deep bond that defines the K-9 unit.

Officer Abele rushed K-9 Benjamin to the 24-Hour Emergency Veterinarian in Brentwood, NH, where the veterinary team immediately initiated life-saving care. Thanks to their expertise and rapid response, K-9 Benjamin was stabilized and later transferred to multiple specialized veterinary clinics within the region for continued treatment and evaluation.

We are grateful and relieved to share that K-9 Benjamin is currently recovering well at home and is expected to make a full return to duty. His strength, spirit, and resilience are a testament not only to his training but to the unwavering care he received.

The Epping Police Department extends our heartfelt thanks to the incredible staff at the Emergency Veterinarian & Surgical Hospital in Brentwood, the Vogel Veterinary Emergency & Specialty located in Stratham, as well as the various veterinary teams across the region who played vital roles in K-9 Benjamin's ongoing recovery.

K-9 Benjamin is not just a working partner—he is family. We look forward to seeing him back on patrol, keeping the streets of Epping safe, as soon as he is able.
