“What’s funny to some people… almost cost her everything.”

As we close out Women’s History Month, we’re highlighting another clip from our Addiction Talk with Madeline Smith, fitness influencer, military spouse, and a voice for real recovery.

“That drunken tale might be funny to you… But to me, it almost killed me.”

She’s not sharing this to shock people.
She’s sharing it because there’s another side of the story, one that doesn’t always get talked about.

And because someone out there might be where she once was, needing to hear how bad it can get and that life can be SO MUCH BETTER on the other side.

Today, her life looks different.
Stronger. Healthier. More intentional.

That’s what redefining strength looks like.

Celebrating Our Every Day Heroes! 💚

This month, we’re sharing the stories of women in recovery who are part of our community -- including women who now work in our treatment centers supporting others on their recovery journeys.

This is Alexis "Sarge" B.'s story.

“I wore many masks to please my family and had no idea who I was.”

Before recovery, Sarge was surviving in anger, isolation, and a cycle that kept pulling her further away from herself. Seven treatment centers. Overdose. Jail. Homelessness.

And still… nothing changed. Until it did.

Her turning point didn’t come from being told what to do. It came from a moment of complete surrender. The kind that comes from the heart, not the head. ❤️

This is a story about what happens when you stop running. When you face everything you’ve been trying to numb. When you choose something different, even when it’s terrifying.

✨ Today, Alexis uses her experience to help other people stop running back to what is comfortable and help them discover what happens when they choose recovery.

If you’ve ever felt stuck between what’s familiar and what could be possible, this is for you.

As we wrap up Self-Harm Awareness Month, we want to widen the conversation a bit.

Self-harm isn’t always obvious. It doesn’t always look like what people expect.

➡️ Sometimes it shows up as self-neglect.
➡️ Sometimes it’s pushing yourself past your limits, over and over.
➡️ Sometimes it’s the way you speak to yourself when no one else is around.
➡️ Sometimes it’s coping in ways that quietly chip away at your well-being.

If something is hurting you, even in small ways, it matters.

You don’t have to “prove” that it’s serious enough to deserve support. You don’t have to wait until it looks like a crisis.

But remember: you’re not alone. And you don’t have to figure it out on your own either.🫶

It’s okay to not be okay.
And when you’re ready, we’re here to help you find your better. 🧡

📩 DM or call us anytime, whether you’re just starting to question things or you already know you want support.📲 866-407-4130

They didn’t just enter the conversation… they changed it.

From trauma-informed care to public health policy to redefining what recovery even looks like, these women have shaped the way we understand addiction, healing, and the people behind it. ❤️

This isn’t just about credentials (though… there are plenty of those).

It’s about impact. The kind that ripples outward into treatment centers, communities, and real lives.

From Nadine Burke Harris’ groundbreaking work on childhood trauma, to Stephanie Covington’s gender-responsive models...

To Lois Wilson, who made sure families had a seat at the table, alongside leaders like Gloria Addo-Ayensu and Carolyn Rodriguez continuing to move the field forward...

We’re standing on some pretty powerful shoulders.
✨ Recovery isn’t one-size-fits-all
✨ Lived experience matters
✨ The way we treat people matters

🙋 We asked around the office: Who are you actually following when you want honesty, perspective… or just a laugh on a hard day?

These were the names that kept coming up. Women talking about recovery in ways that feel real, relatable, and (sometimes) a little (or a lot) unfiltered in the best way!

Whether you’re looking for insight, community, or just someone who gets it, these are a few voices worth having in your feed. 💚

We’re always here too. If you ever need support, have questions, or just don’t know where to start, you can DM us or reach out anytime. 🤍 866-407-4832

💪 Maddie Smith is Redefining Strength! 💪

No one talks enough about how isolating early motherhood can be.

For Maddie Smith, it started with postpartum depression, long stretches alone during deployment, and emotions she didn’t know how to handle. What followed was a shift from “fun drinking” to something heavier… something harder to control.

And like so many people, she thought a fresh start might fix it. It didn’t.

In this clip, Maddie shares how isolation, identity loss, and unprocessed emotions quietly fueled her addiction—and what finally helped her see it clearly.

Sometimes, relapse can teach you something sobriety can’t.

It’s not something people like to say out loud, but if you’re willing to take an honest look, it can build real self-awareness.

👉 Understanding your triggers.
👉 Recognizing cravings without reacting to them.
👉 Finding new ways to cope in those moments.

❤️ And most importantly, leaning on your community.

Because recovery isn’t meant to be done alone. The people you surround yourself with can make all the difference, especially on the hard days.

If you’re struggling, or if someone you love is, know that setbacks don’t erase progress. What matters is what you do next.

Some stories are worth coming back to. 💚

As part of Women’s History Month, we’re revisiting voices from My Recovery Story—not just to celebrate where they are now, but to recognize what it took to get there.

When Madison entered treatment in 2023, she was facing more than alcohol use. After weight-loss surgery, her relationship with food had shifted into drinking, and her health had declined so severely she could no longer walk.

She arrived in treatment in a wheelchair, unsure of what came next.

👉 If you’ve ever wondered how things got this far -- or if it’s even possible to come back from it -- you’re not alone.

Madison didn’t have everything figured out. She just kept showing up. Even on the hard days. Even when she doubted herself.

Over time, things began to shift. Strength returned, physically and emotionally.

❤️ Today, she’s back on her feet, raising her child, and building a life she once couldn’t see for herself. ❤️

⭐ Recovery doesn’t require you to be fearless. Just willing.

And choosing it? That’s its own kind of strength.

🧠 Alcohol doesn’t affect everyone the same, especially after bariatric surgery.

Dr. Gary Mitrevolis, our Medical Director at Southern California facility, Laguna Treatment Center, shared an important perspective that isn't often discussed.

He shared that after bariatric surgery, commonly referred to as weight-loss surgery, the body processes alcohol differently. It’s absorbed faster, can feel stronger, and may stay in the system longer. For some, that can increase the risk of developing an alcohol use disorder -- sometimes even when drinking habits haven’t changed significantly.

This isn’t about willpower. It’s about how the body and brain respond. Understanding this can make a meaningful difference for patients, families, and anyone supporting someone in recovery.

💬 Have you or someone you know experienced changes with alcohol after surgery?

Behind so many moments of healing, there’s a social worker. 🫶

✨ The ones who sit in the hard conversations.
✨ Who help families make sense of the chaos.
✨ Who advocate, guide, and hold space, often without recognition.

Many of the people supporting our patients are licensed social workers, and their impact reaches far beyond our walls. Every day, social workers are on the frontlines in communities, helping individuals and families find stability, resources, and hope.🫶

This Social Work Month, we just want to say: we love our social workers. And we are endlessly grateful for the work you do! 💚

Fueling Recovery... On a Budget 🥣

It's National Nutrition Month, and we want to talk about something that doesn’t get said enough:
👉 Healthy eating doesn’t have to be expensive to be effective.

When you’re in recovery, how you fuel your body matters. Steady, nourishing meals can support mood, energy, and overall stability. But that doesn’t mean you need fancy ingredients or a big grocery bill.

This high-protein, high-fiber chili is built from simple, affordable staples like beans, tomatoes, and spices, and it still delivers where it counts.

✨ Why it works:
• Protein helps support muscle repair and keeps you feeling full longer
• Fiber supports gut health and steady blood sugar (which can help with cravings)
• Complex carbs provide sustained energy throughout the day
• Micronutrients like iron, potassium, and magnesium help your body recover and rebalance

It’s warm, filling, easy to make. And proof that taking care of yourself doesn’t have to be complicated or costly.
Because in recovery, it’s not about perfection; it’s about building something sustainable.

👇 Let's talk about it. What's your chili style: beans all the way, no beans, or “whatever’s in the pantry”?

🔥 Redefining Strength 🔥

“I never dealt with anything that I needed to deal with. So then I started drinking…”

Military wife and fitness influencer Madeline Smith knows what it means to push through challenges, but addiction doesn’t care about discipline or appearances. In this Addiction Talk clip, she shares her honest story about how drinking slowly crept into her life, and the moment she realized change was necessary.
