❄️ Winter Break & Unstructured Time: A Hidden Stressor for Kids with Autism & ADHD ❄️

While winter break can be relaxing for adults, too much unstructured time can be overwhelming for many children with autism or ADHD.

Without predictable routines, kids may experience:
• Increased anxiety or irritability
• More meltdowns or emotional outbursts
• Trouble sleeping
• Increased screen dependence
• Difficulty transitioning back to school

✨ What helps? Structure + flexibility. ✨

Simple strategies parents can try:
✅ Create a loose daily schedule (wake time, meals, activities, downtime)
✅ Use visual schedules or checklists
✅ Balance movement, creativity, and rest
✅ Plan one predictable anchor activity each day
✅ Keep bedtime and wake time as consistent as possible

You don’t need a perfect plan—just enough predictability to help your child feel safe and regulated.

💙 If winter break feels harder than expected, you’re not doing anything wrong. Your child’s brain simply thrives on routine.

🌟 Understanding Anxiety in Autism 🌟

Did you know that anxiety is one of the most common co-occurring conditions in children and teens with autism?

For many autistic individuals, anxiety can show up in unique ways — not always as “worry” or “fear,” but through changes in behavior, sleep, appetite, or even increased rigidity in routines. Common signs might include:
💭 Repetitive questioning or seeking reassurance
💭 Avoiding new or social situations
💭 Meltdowns or shutdowns during transitions
💭 Physical complaints (stomachaches, headaches)

The good news? Anxiety can be treated effectively through tailored supports — such as cognitive-behavioral strategies, parent coaching, structured routines, and sensory regulation techniques.
