Summer is here, and so is the heat.

Even in the mountains, heat and humidity can be dangerous. Last year, there were 280 heat-related emergency room visits in Western North Carolina, most of them caused by heat exhaustion.

🔥 Now is the time to get prepared for heat waves:
• Stay hydrated even if you are not thirsty.
• Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing
• Avoid sun during the hottest parts of the day and take breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas
• Check on older adults, children, neighbors, and pets
• Never leave children or animals in parked cars
• Learn the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke: https://www.cdc.gov/heat-health/

Let’s enjoy summer safely.

The Atlantic hurricane season started June 1. Are you ready?

Last year brought widespread storms across the Southeast and Caribbean, and this year is expected to be similar.

Our region may not face storm surge, but we are still vulnerable to flooding, power outages, and dangerous winds. Flash flooding is the biggest concern in the mountains, where steep slopes and narrow valleys can turn heavy rain into a serious hazard.

Now is the time to:
• Understand your local flood risk
• Pay close attention to weather forecasts
• Have a plan in place
• Remember that areas far from the coast can feel the impact of hurricanes

Take these steps today to get prepared
• Check your flood risk: https://fris.nc.gov
• Build your emergency kit: https://www.ready.gov/kit
• Sign up for emergency alerts: https://public.coderedweb.com/CNE/en-US/BFD3B97BABEB
• Make a plan with your family: https://www.ready.gov/plan

Let’s be safe, not sorry. Preparation starts now.
