It's been a minute since I've pushed out a newsletter! I'm working on making it a more regular occurrence. This newsletter is focused on vulnerability and "leaning into the discomfort of the work." As my business ebbs and flows I'm being vulnerable and leaning into YOU - my amazing clients - hoping you will continue to share my name as a resource for expecting families. Read on to see what's going on at TLC.

Pregnancy, birth, and postpartum are all about vulnerability. If you've ever listened to Brenรฉ Brown, she speaks on vulnerability all the time. She said in one of her Ted Talks "leanย into the discomfort of the work." We can think about and recall the discomfort of the work of growing and sustainin...

Yesterday, October 15, was Pregnancy Loss and Awareness Day. It's the day we remember the babies we hold in our hearts, not in our arms. This year on April 1 I witnessed the birth of MM - it was also the day she earned her angel wings. As a doula the death of a child, an infant seems both inevitable (if you've been a doula long enough) and completely impossible.

This is the story of MM from my perspective. She and her parents are never far from my thoughts.

I am so grateful that spring is upon us and the days are getting warmer. As we come out of the dormant winter I'm eager to connect and reconnect with many of you. The past year was a year of tremendous growth for me and Trillium Learning Center. I had the privilege of supporting fifty families welcoming their babies to the world. But due to Covid, our in-person connection ended as soon as I left the birth. I know from my own experience and working with so many families over the past eight years how important face-to-face and physical connection with other moms, parents, and children is for our growth and development.

Read on to learn more about monthly Coffee Talk meet-ups and Wednesday Walks. Additionally, those of you who have given birth in the past year are invited to join me and fellow doula, Jessica Greene, for a six-week virtual postpartum support group.

Why Trillium Learning Center?

In January of 2018 Ginny Parahm and Kelly Brown got together to start brainstorming where and when to teach Lamaze childbirth classes in Brevard. We both work as birth and postpartum doulas with Homegrown Babies and had the blessing of owner, Chama Woydak, to bring Homegrown classes to Transylvania County.

We had each had a few doula clients that were coming from Brevard and the surrounding area to Asheville for classes and doula services and thought - why not bring the classes to them! Our other thought was that surely others in Transylvania County were seeking childbirth education classes but didnโ€™t want to drive all the way out to Asheville.

Living in Mills River and Penrose - Brevard was a logical fit for classes. As we sat and started thinking of what we wanted to accomplish, our goals, and perceived needs of the area, Trillium Learning Center was born.

Why Trillium Learning Center? In short it is TLC - women in pregnancy and families embarking on their journey to parenthood need lots of TLC. We provide support through education and compassion. Three words - three letters. Symbolizing maiden, mother, crone and the th*****me of two parents and a child or an expectant woman, her support person, and a baby, pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. Trillium is also a native Western North Carolina flower - Ginny is a practicing herbalist and will be bringing her salves, tinctures, teas, and herbal knowledge to TLC as well.
