We are very pleased to let you know our home office at 600 Beverly Hanks Centre is reopening on Monday, August 25th. Sunscreen can help protect the skin from sunburn and some skin cancers but only if used correctly. Keep in mind that sunscreen should be used for sun protection, not as a reason to stay in the sun longer.

Now is a great time of year to schedule your child/ teen's well check ups!

We cover many things at a well check up regardlesss of your child's age:

- are they safe to play sports? Or do they need guidance on injury prevention/overuse injuries?
- are they sleeping enough?
- do they have anxiety and/ or depression, disordered eating or other mental health struggles?
- are they balancing the demands of school/ friendships/ activities and family?
- are they eating enough to provide their body with the fuel they need to function at their best
- for asthmatics- are they using their medications properly and at the right time?
- we review family histories to be sure that we are screening for diseases/ disorders they may be at risk for
- are they growing well?
- do they have any abnormal findings on physical exam? Their bodies can warn us if things like diabetes or other chronic illnesses
- we update immunizations if needed

If only the medical system here allowed me the freedom to practice what I've learned. Many insurance companies don't cover osteopathic manipulation. I have a tremendous respect for the field of osteopathy and I do practice the philosophy of it, but I find little time to do manipulation. So all I can do is incorporate it here and there- myofascial techniques for muscle spams, auricular drainage technique for ear infections, treat a few headaches or treat a slipped rib. Hoping with time things will get better for us - the osteopathic pediatricians. In the meantime, the practice of medicine teaches me over and over again that the body is a unit and has the innate ability to heal itself.

Update on our offices...
We are currently seeing patients in three offices:
-157 Medical Park Dr in Brevard
-110 Chadwick Square Ct. Suite C. in Hendersonville
-Blue Ridge Health - 2579 Chimney Rock Rd in Hendersonville

We have begun construction on both our Beverly Hanks location (which was completely flooded in Helene) and our new Brevard office which will be at 90 S. Caldwell Street.
Expected completion dates mid-late summer.

We appreciate your patience as we continue to deliver the quality care our patients and families deserve in what is limited space. We remain committed to you - our HP Family.

Remember that we remain available and are open weekdays, weeknights and every weekend. We only close on Christmas Day.

Does your child have asthma?

Reminder: If your child has asthma we should see them for an asthma follow up every 3-6 m depending on how well- controlled their asthma symptoms are. Asthma can be triggered by exercise, viruses, pets and seasonal allergies. Spring is a prime time for allergies. If your child is using their rescue ( Albuterol) inhaler more than twice a week or waking up with cough/ wheeze, they are likely not well- controlled. Even mild asthmatics can end up hospitalized. Remind your child to use a spacer/ aerochamber every time they use an inhaler so that the medication can reach the lungs where it needs to be. And one last, friendly reminder: yearly flu shots are important for kids with asthma bc they are at a higher risk for severe illness if they get the flu.
