🐶Is your furry friend scratching a lot? This August, we're celebrating Itchy Pet Awareness Month to help pet parents just like you spot the signs of skin problems in their pets.
Itchy skin is one of the top reasons pets visit the vet, and it's not always easy to tell if your pet's scratching is normal or a sign of something more serious.
Look for these common symptoms:
✅Constant scratching, licking, or biting
✅Excessive rolling or rubbing on furniture or the floor
✅Recurring ear infections or head shaking
✅Patchy hair loss
✅Visible skin changes like redness, rashes, or scabs
✅Unpleasant body odor
✅"Hot spots"—red, irritated, and often oozing patches of skin
What's causing the itch?
The cause can be anything from allergies (to things like pollen or food) to pesky parasites like fleas, or even skin infections.

Guardian Veterinary Specialists is founded by Jason Berg, DVM, DACVIM, a highly respected, board certified neurologist and internist with over 22 years’ experience in practice and as a veterinary business founder and owner. A much sought-after lecturer and instructor, both nationally and internationally, Dr. Berg is also a published author with articles in peer-reviewed journals, such as the American Veterinary Medical Association, Veterinary Internal Medicine, and American Animal Hospital Association, among others. He has held multiple positions with the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, and he is president of the Westchester Rockland Veterinary Medical Association.
