June is Men's Mental Health Awareness Month. Its a conversation that should be had not only during one month but on a regular basis.
According to the Canadian Mental Health Association "Beliefs about masculinity also encourage men’s general lack of interest in health issues; many men simply don’t believe they are susceptible to depression, so why bother learning about it? Similarly, risky behaviour, seen especially in younger men – including abuse of alcohol and/or drugs and violence – can mask their emotional problems, both from themselves and their physicians".
Stable Minds Equestrian is a place where men are understood and are offered safe, open space to discuss their needs and be heard. Mental Health is not an easily walked path, and taking the first step can be the hardest, so let's start by walking together.

May is Mental Health Awareness month. We believe this is a great opportunity to start conversations. Stable Minds encourages you to talk to someone about mental health in any manner.
In 2020 1 in 4 youth (age 5 to 24) were hospitalized due to mental health conditions. Stable Minds offers support that will help decrease the number of mental health hospitalizations by providing preventative measures to youth and families. Stable Minds works collaboratively to mitigate trauma sharing and help individuals establish their support system.

Two years ago I was honored to be a part of a naming ceremony. This ceremony was filled with love and celebration! Today we stop to recognize and remember missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and two spirited individuals. These spirits are with us during these times of celebration and deserve to be honored, not only today but everyday.

Child-centered Practice:
That each child must have a unique client service plan that reflects the most current assessment of their needs.
There is no dominant single, clear-cut, research or theoretically-based treatment approach that can be used for each child the same. Stable Minds Equestrian works from a client-centered approach utilizing individual interventions.

Horses can learn and remember complex tasks, such as navigating a jump course or performing a routine, through a process called associate learning. Human behavior can be modified or learned based on a stimulus and a response, this is also associate learning. Horses and humans can connect because of this shared process which leads to a better understanding of each other. At Stable Minds Equestrian we focus on the stimulus you receive from your horse as well as develop an understanding of how you are stimulating your horse and others in your life.

There is no regulatory body with authority to protect Albertans receiving services from counselling therapists. This means, there is no enforcement of minimum standards of training or competencies, no entity to receive and investigate complaints, and remove practice permits when necessary.

This recent example of Brianne Hudson moving into a counselling position with a focus on addictions after losing her practice permit and registration from The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta, emphasizes the reality of the situation.

Alberta has legislation to regulate counsellors since 2018. The College of Counselling Therapy of Alberta is waiting for the government’s proclamation so Albertans can be protected.

The equine capacity to both feel emotions and perceive human emotions is cited as key in new programs that build on our bond with horses.

The risk is real. Did you know that legislation to protect individuals who have experienced sexual abuse and misconduct by health professionals does NOT apply to clients of counselling therapists, addiction counsellors or child and youth care counsellors? If one of these counsellors commits sexual abuse or misconduct against a client, there is no regulatory body to take away their licence to practice and they may continue to work as a counsellor in Alberta, with vulnerable people. This is wrong and unsafe.

It’s been found that having a regulatory body overseeing health professionals and their continued competencies, reduces risk to the public." Laura Hahn, Interim CEO and Registrar of ACTA.

The Alberta Government unanimously voted to regulate counselling professions under the Mental Health Services Protection Act but has stalled proclaiming regulation into force. Brianne Hudson lost her ability to practice with her medical license due to sexual abuse against a patient. She immediately was able to become a counsellor focused on addictions in Alberta because the government stalled proclaiming the College of Counselling Therapy of Alberta.

Albertans have waited too long for the government to provide them basic protection when receiving services from counselling therapists, addiction counsellors, and child and youth care counsellors. This scenario and many others are preventable.
