Today we are celebrating a very special milestone- my sweet friend is officially graduating from occupational therapy!

She has worked so hard to build strength, coordination, confidence, and independence. From practicing fine motor skills and body awareness to learning how to regulate big feelings and try new challenges, she has shown so much growth — and we are so proud of her.

Way to go, superstar! 🌟 you have the tools you need to keep thriving, learning, and exploring the world with confidence.
I can’t wait to see all the incredible things you will do next.

There can be many reasons a child becomes dysregulated.

Not everything is sensory.

A child might be struggling because they are:
• emotionally overwhelmed
• overtired or didn’t sleep well
• hungry, sick, or uncomfortable
• still building rapport and trust
• lacking structure or predictable routines

In my 10+ years in school-based OT, I’ve seen a huge increase in how quickly we jump to sensory. And while sensory strategies are powerful, they’re not always the whole answer.

Sometimes that pressure to find a quick sensory fix can even make therapists feel like they’re failing. When in reality, many regulation challenges don’t have a single simple solution. More often, it’s a combination of factors that requires a team approach, including teachers, families, and behavior specialists.

Some behaviors are not automatically sensory-based:

• crying when told “no”
• hitting, pushing, or biting when a toy is taken
• throwing materials when asked to clean up
• melting down after losing a game
• refusing to leave a preferred activity

These moments are often about emotional regulation, frustration tolerance, impulse control, and coping skills, not sensory input.

Self-regulation is absolutely critical for our students.
But sometimes it’s more than sensory and that’s okay.
It just means the support needs to be broader, deeper, and more collaborative.

3 simple yoga poses to help kids feel calm 🧘‍♀️

When kids are overwhelmed, their nervous system often needs movement before it can settle. These three gentle yoga poses give their bodies the input they need to feel safe, grounded, and ready to relax.

1️⃣ Frog Pose
This deep squat gently stretches the hips and gives strong input through the legs and feet. It helps kids feel grounded and organized in their bodies.

2️⃣ Butterfly Pose
Sitting tall with the soles of the feet together encourages body awareness, core engagement, and slow breathing. This is a great pose for transitions and quiet moments.

3️⃣ Child’s Pose
This cozy forward fold provides gentle pressure and a feeling of safety. It’s perfect for calming big emotions and helping kids reset.

✨ Tip: Let kids move in and out of each pose freely. Wiggling, rocking, or changing positions is part of how their nervous system learns to regulate.

Save this for your calm-down toolbox and try it the next time your child needs a moment to reset 🤍

Did you know that handwriting skills are built on a foundation of various underlying skills? 📝 Here are some of the essential building blocks of handwriting development:

💺 Posture: Good posture helps with stability and control, allowing for more efficient use of the arms, hands, and fingers.

🧠 Executive Functioning Skills: These include cognitive processes such as planning, organizing, and self-regulation, which are crucial for following instructions and completing written tasks.

🎨 Visual Motor Integration: This refers to the ability to coordinate visual information with motor movements, allowing for precise and accurate letter formation.

🖐️ Fine Motor Development: This encompasses the development of small muscles in the hands and fingers, which are necessary for holding and controlling a writing utensil.

🧑‍🦲 Sensory Processing: This refers to how our nervous system processes and responds to sensory input, which can impact handwriting in areas such as pencil pressure and letter size.

As 2025 comes to a close, I’m feeling incredibly grateful.

This review highlights the strong behavioural and neurological links between motor difficulties and ADHD, arguing that motor challenges should be understood as a core feature of the condition rather than a secondary issue. Using a dynamical systems perspective, the researchers propose that motor and cognitive difficulties in ADHD arise from shared disruptions in sensorimotor processes and environmental exploration. These disruptions shape how children interact with, learn from, and adapt to their environments, suggesting that motor and attentional difficulties co-emerge rather than existing in a simple cause-and-effect relationship.
