Meet Midge 🐾 a 6-year-old miniature Dachshund ✨

Read about Midge’s incredible journey from paralysis to complete recovery below:

"Midge, a 6yo miniature dachshund, came in completely paralyzed in all four legs. Having previously lost a pet to complications of IVDD, I was terrified for my sweet girl. Dr. Danel was extremely kind, very knowledgeable, and very helpful. She immediately got Midge into an MRI, called me to let me know it confirmed the diagnosis of a severely herniated disc in Midge's cervical spine, and let me know it was unlikely to heal without surgery. She took Midge straight into surgery and called me when it was over. Throughout, I also received text messages when Midge started anesthesia and when the procedure started, and when it ended. That evening, Dr. Chauvet texted me to let me know she was on call for Midge and Midge was doing well and already trying to take some steps. Midge was discharged the very next morning! Throughout the first two weeks of recovery, both Dr. Danel and Dr. Chauvet were available via text and email for ALL of my questions (there were a lot!). By the time Midge went in for her two week follow up, she was almost 100% back to normal! A week later, she is completely back to normal." -Midge's Family 🤍

Thank you to our amazing Neurology Department for everything you do, and thank you to Midge's brave family for trusting us with Midge's care! 🩺

✨We’re thrilled to share Cannoli's incredible recovery story!✨

"This sweet 12-year-old poodle mix, who has a history of proteinuria, faced a tough battle after developing severe acute kidney injury (AKI). With her kidneys shutting down and no urine production, hemodialysis became the last resort to save her life. Thankfully, her devoted parents chose to give her the best chance by proceeding with treatment. After undergoing five hemodialysis treatments to stabilize her condition, Cannoli's renal function improved, and she began urinating again. It’s been an incredible journey, and we’re happy to report that Cannoli has now been dialysis-free for the past 10 months and is thriving! While she is currently being managed for chronic kidney disease by our internal medicine team, her recovery has been nothing short of inspiring. Cannoli is living proof that with the right treatment, determination, and ongoing care, even pets facing severe kidney injury can recover and go on to lead happy, fulfilling lives. Her journey serves as a heartening reminder of the strength and resilience of our furry companions, and the critical importance of timely medical intervention. We’re so grateful to have been part of Cannoli’s recovery and are excited to continue supporting her health and her family moving forward." -Dr. Fosset

Thank you, Dr. Fosset and team, for all that you do! We're also thankful that Cannoli's family has chosen to trust our team with Cannoli's initial diagnosis and treatment, as well as her ongoing care! 🩺🐾

🌟 Specialist Spotlight: Dr. Sarah Friday 🌟
Meet Dr. Friday, one of our incredible veterinary surgeons at NorthStar VETS! With a deep love for animals and a passion for problem-solving, Dr. Friday brings expertise and compassion to every case she handles. 🩺🐾

💡 What inspired you to become a veterinary surgeon and what specific procedures do you specialize in?
"I've always had a deep love for animals. It probably started with my interest in wildlife and nature as a kid, and grew to include our furry family members. That paired with my passion with working with my hands and fixing problems, drew me to veterinary surgery. I specialize in a wide variety of soft tissue, surgical oncology, and orthopedic procedures."

🤝 Why did you choose NorthStar VETS and can you share how you collaborate with other veterinary specialists?
"I was attracted to NorthStar because of the range of specialists, state-of-the-art equipment, and skilled nursing team. It's so valuable (and not commonplace) to be able to collaborate with colleagues who are experts in their field. From being able to provide multifaceted perioperative care for cancer patients with our medical and radiation oncologists to ensuring the best possible recovery after knee surgery with our rehab specialist — it's a full-service hospital."

🔧 Can you share any advancements in surgical technology that have improved outcomes for pets?
"Minimally invasive techniques, such as laparoscopic procedures, prophylactic gastropexies and joint arthroscopy, allow us to minimize patient recovery time."

❤️ Can you share an example of a rewarding case and what do you enjoy most about being a surgeon?
"It's hard to pick just one — technically challenging surgeries bring me a lot of satisfaction to work through, but every case where we are able to achieve a good outcome for the patient and their family is rewarding. Ultimately, we are all here to make the lives of our pets the healthiest and happiest they can be."

⚠️ Important Update: High Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) ⚠️

High Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) also known as "bird flu" is a highly contagious viral disease of immediate concern. This virus primarily affects a wide range of bird species, but has recently been reported to impact certain mammalian species. According to the CDC, this has also been confirmed in humans.

Due to the resurgence of HPAI cases nationwide, we will no longer be able to triage or perform euthanasia for any wild birds at the hospital, including, raptors, falcons, geese, ducks, etc at this time. We will continue to evaluate privately owned domestic poultry and waterfowl with additional biosecurity measures and protocols.

If you find an injured wild bird, please contact the New Jersey Department of Fish and Wildlife or the local animal control department. Be sure to have the exact location, species, and description of the problem for the department that is contacted.

If your domestic chicken, duck, or goose is having a medical problem, please contact us to discuss your concerns, so we can schedule you appropriately. These precautions are necessary to protect our patients, including other avian and mammalian species, as well as our staff, from potential exposure.

Since parrots, canaries, and finches are unlikely to contract the disease and our traditionally housed indoors, we will continue to see these patients as usual with no additional measures or precautions, at this time.

We will continue to analyze the situation and hope that we can see all species soon. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your understanding as we prioritize the health and safety of everyone. Thank you for your cooperation during this time.
