Today, on International Day of the Midwife 2026, I am holding deep gratitude for the midwives who have walked alongside me on this journey.

Too many women are still dying from preventable causes during pregnancy and birth. Too many babies are struggling. We know that skilled care before, during, and after birth saves lives, and midwives are uniquely positioned to provide that care. Why are we still investing in systems that were never built to care about us?

Midwives, OUR Midwives, were systemically and very intentionally pushed out and criminalized. And although we have survived, the truth is, the world is short at least one million midwives.

That is why I am deeply committed not only to serving families but also to strengthening the next generation of midwives. We cannot close this gap without mentorship, community, and intentional investment in those coming behind us.

When will this country submit to the fact that other industrialized countries do better than we do in infant and maternal health because they use midwives, not OB/GYN obstetric surgeons to care for normal pregnancies?

We cannot wait for businesses like hospitals and insurance companies to tell us what we already know. Why would they?

Midwives save lives. It's proven globally, and we are behind. It's time to catch up and go beyond!

“The Power of Nurses” is not just in clinical skill. It is in your presence, intuition, and advocacy.

To our ENT doulas who have stepped into Labor & Delivery as nurses, you carry your training, your heart, and your commitment to families into every birth room and on every shift.

We are deeply proud of the way you bridge worlds by holding space, speaking up, and bringing compassionate, person-centered care into hospital settings where it is so needed.

You bring community-centered care into clinical rooms, and that matters more than words can hold.
You didn’t leave doula work behind. You expanded it. 🤎 Your work is changing outcomes. Your presence matters.

We know that is not always easy. We know you get pushback when you speak up. And we know you can’t help yourselves. You are TRUE advocates for families.

Your sisters at Earth’s Natural Touch: Birth Care & Beyond are incredibly proud of you for stepping into these roles and transforming birth spaces from within. We knew you would. 💜

Caring about Black Maternal Health does not end when Black Maternal Health Week ends. Justice and Joy never ends. Shout out to our Doulas & Perinatal Health Advocates at Earth's Natural Touch: Birth Care & Beyond, inc. 💜 and all the other Birth Professionals who do this EVERY day. ✊🏽 Shout out to the Black midwives who turn tables over and shake things up. ✊🏽 Shout out to the Black midwives who support learning midwives on their path. ✊🏽 Shout out to the Black midwives who are learning to remember to care for themselves while they care for others. ✊🏽 Shout out to the Black midwives who have sacrificed and lost so much, but also gained this beautiful life of a midwife. ✊🏽 Shout out to the Black midwives who show up in spaces outside of the birth room to make change, even if it's uncomfortable. ✊🏽 Shout out to the Black midwives who understand the value of true community. ✊🏽 Shout out to the Black midwives who understand the mission and are on it. ✊🏽

"You will be held and provided for because you will be supporting the community", Midwife Kimberly Durdin at once said this to me, and I hold it as a reminder when things get tough. 💜

There is no mystery. If we don't do it for ourselves and each other, it won't be done. ✊🏽

Support Black Midwives!!! ✊🏽

We have been training ENT Interdisciplinary Doulas for 10 YEARS!

Our 10th cohort started this week, during Black Maternal Health Week 2026!

Our doulas have profoundly impacted countless families through the care they provide.

Doulas have benefited from the advocacy and policy work that we have done.

And now, a new group of doulas is rising with us during Black Maternal Health Week!

To our newest students and all of our graduates, you have answered the call to do this purpose-driven work, which is rooted in advocacy, love, dignity, liberation, respect, knowledge, justice, and joy.

We appreciate you!

Let’s continue to improve Black Maternal and Infant Health! Together we go far!
