01/04/2026

Today, with heavy hearts, we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Janell Green Smith, DNP, CNM, APRN, a midwife, a scholar, an advocate, a beloved clinician, and now, a profound loss felt across our community and the nation. Dr. Smith passed away after childbirth, which is a heartbreaking reminder that even the most educated, committed Black midwives are not immune to the consequences of the systemic failures in maternal care that we are fighting to change.

Yet her story, ended far too soon. She was a midwife who dedicated her life to bringing others safely into this world died giving birth. This is not just tragic. It is unacceptable and intolerable. It is the symptom of a maternal health system in crisis, ESPECIALLY for Black women. It is rooted in systemic racism and unequal care, where even expertise and access cannot guarantee safety.

Dr. Smith didn’t just attend births. She served with compassion. Hundreds of babies entered this world because she cared deeply. Her legacy is woven into every life she helped bring into being and in every advocate she inspired along the way.

At Earth’s Natural Touch: Birth Care & Beyond, we carry this loss not merely in sorrow, but in renewed determination. Maternal mortality should not be someone’s story. Ever. In our training, We are taught that no one is exempt. Dr. Smith was not the only medical profession to lose her life to maternal mortality. This is why we work to prevent this tragedy. This is urgent! We stand with midwives, families, advocates, and communities in mourning and in action.

We got work to do!

Here's the topic of the week:
3) December 27th Topic: Prenatal and Postpartum Nutrition
Sponsored by the City of Norwalk, CT

12/24/2025

Our founding director, SciHonor Devotion, CPM participated in the launch of Connecticut’s Maternal Health Blueprint as a panelist, advisory committee member, and supporter along with the commissioners of DPH and DSS, Dr. Iyanna Liles, OBGYN and co-chair of the CT Maternal Mortality Review Committee, Dr. Marcella Nunez-Smith (Founding Director of ERIC - Yale School of Medicine), Mark Schaffer (CT Hospital Association), Dr. Tabassum Firoz, Obstetric Internal Medicine at Bridgeport Hospital). Dr. Joia Crear-Perry,founder and president of the National Birth Equity Collaborative was the event’s keynote speaker who left Connecticut with a lot to think about.

Throughout the development process, the advisory committee, made up of diverse experts discussed and reviewed multiple potential recommendations. After talking to community members, clinical experts, policymakers, and researchers to provide input and advice, the team eventually boiled them down to these five strategic actions which are designed to reflect the perspectives of those with lived experience, foster shared accountability for inequities, and name and address the impact of structural racism:

1) Tracking and awareness: Treat inequities in severe maternal morbidity as a critical public health issue.
2) Access all provider types: Ensure patients can access a wide range of providers, including doulas and community health workers.
3) Behavioral health: Strengthen connections between maternal health and behavioral health services.
4) Workforce diversity and training: Address discrimination in health care and diversify the workforce.
5) Economic stability: Increase economic security and mobility among families.

Although ambitious, the blueprint aims to achieve a 50% reduction of severe maternal morbidity among Black women over a three-year period, closing the racial gap for Connecticut and improving outcomes for all.

In summary, as SciHonor always says, “We Got Work To Do”
