In Connecticut, more than 85% of mothers initiate breastfeeding. But racial disparities persist, and many families need education and support to be successful.

Special shout-out to LaSonya Cromartie, eCID, ePLC who bravely shared her personal birth and lactation story highlighting the urgent need for doula-led support in breastfeeding initiation, and Yvette Tucker, eCID, ePLC who was able to add another powerfully authentic voice to the conversation by sharing her experience as well.

We are so proud of LaSonya and Yvette for bringing visibility, courage, and hope to our collective mission. Their stories reflect exactly why doulas matter. Join us in celebrating this Black Breastfeeding Week and honoring the real-life experiences of these Black women that inspire change.

Thank you Daileann Hemmings, Program Director of Maternal Health Equity and everyone at Hartford Hospital who is working so hard to create more doula-friendly hospital campuses. Together we can see the change, we want to see.

SciHonor worked for this. She earned this. For 5 years, she stayed focused and busted her buns along with her classmates, all while being a support to her peers, training and supporting interdisciplinary doulas in multiple states, working on state legislation and policy pertaining to increasing the doula workforce and doula access for families, participating in initiatives, committees, and task forces to improve maternal and infant health including lactation, and creating and overseeing multiple programs that made space for doulas to do what they love by supporting hundreds of families near and far.

The best part of it all is.... after more than 2 decades doing this work, she's just getting started.

Every year, August is Breastfeeding Awareness Month ! We aim to highlight the importance of supporting mothers, parents and families through their breastfeeding journey. Breastfeeding plays a huge role in both infant and mother's nutritional health and wellbeing. ENT Doulas are equipped with the knowledge to provide resources, support and education on the importance of breast-feeding. There are many mothers and families receiving discouraging and false information regarding breastfeeding. This leads them to giving up and not receiving the support they deserve and need. We use this month and every other month to address these issues to further progress maternal health. Breastfeeding is natural and a beautiful journey, we are here to support you through it. You deserve to experience a successful breastfeeding journey. 💜
