This year Memorial Day falls on May 27th, and at Laurel Lawn Cemetery we take special care to remember our fallen heroes. During the coming weeks we will be highlighting a few of the veteran’s interred here:
We will begin with E. Morgan “Bud” Maxwell (1928-2015) whom we at Laurel Lawn Cemetery hold close to our hearts. He is the father of many of the board members and grandfather of some of the Laurel Lawn staff. As superintendent of the cemetery for decades, he made maintaining the grounds a priority and deserves credit for making this place the best looking cemetery in the area. He was a lifelong resident of Bridgeton and served as mayor of the city twice. Joining the US Navy directly after graduating high school; he served on the submarine USS Greenfish and the Battleship Iowa.
In 2002 Bud instituted a Memorial Day Service here at Laurel Lawn Cemetery, which is annually held at 2:00 pm the Sunday before Memorial Day. This event includes a variety of speakers from the community of different faiths and honored positions, an honor guard salute (with cannon fire and taps), and a band of bagpipers. Bagpiping was always a treat for Bud, who was very proud of his Scottish heritage.
Bud and his wife (Pat), are buried at Laurel Lawn Cemetery right by the center flagpole; which he and the cemetery were awarded a plaque for properly displaying the Flag of the United States of America. Bud loves his country and the people who call the United States home. The truth of this is reflected in his life’s work and the traditions he began, which will continue at Laurel Lawn Cemetery for many years to come.
Come join us on Sunday, May 26 at 2:00 to help us honor America’s fallen heroes!
