WITH SO MANY PEOPLE PICKING UP HIKING FOR THE FIRST TIME JUST TO KEEP THEIR SANITY. I THINK IT IS IMPORTANT TO REMIND EVERYONE TO BE THINKING AHEAD BEFORE THE GO OUT. HERE ARE A FEW ITEMS I KNOW MANY WILL AGREE WITH... PLEASE ADD IF ANY ITEMS HAVE BEEN FORGOTTEN
Research- seems simple but this will help you as a hiker know what to expect when you attempt your hike. This means check the weather (this helps determine how prepared you need to be), level of difficulty of hike, length, parking permits needed, etc. Most Parks have trail Maps available on their websites or at the park offices.
Be Prepared- Regardless of the length or level of difficulty of the hike, you should have the following:
Have proper footwear for the hike. (too many times I see people ill prepared, this is where you risk getting injured)
Have a backpack for the hike that carries the supplies you need.
Come with snacks and something to drink. (even if it is a quick hike, it ensures you are hydrated and have the energy to complete your journey, also just in case you get stuck you now are not relying on someone sharing w you)
Hiking Sticks- helpful in hikes where there are steep inclines
Headlamps/flashlights- just in case you get stuck in the dark.
Matches/ Firestarter- just in case
Warm clothes, but more importantly, layers so you can get warm or cool off easily.
Be Respectful
You are not the only one on this trail. Move to the side when people are passing you or if you notice you are going slower than others. If you are going faster than others, don’t bully someone, just ask if you can pass them.
When trails are narrow and others are approaching look to see who has the best path to move to the side and do so.
Follow the Leave No Trace rules: If you bring it in, take it out.
Sometimes we need to go to the bathroom on a long hike- bring a shovel and bury your waste
Be Aware
Of others, you are not on this hike alone in most cases.
Your surroundings, the likelihood of coming across a wild animal is rare, but always be scanning to make sure one is not sneaking up on you.
Pay attention, how many people died or were injured recently because of not being aware of their surroundings on the trail only to fall?
Happy Hiking
