Senior Pet Dental Care🦷🪥

We understand that there may be some myths around dental care for senior pets:

- “My pet’s teeth look fine.” Dental disease often hides beneath the gumline, where it’s not visible.
- “They’re too old for a dental.” Age doesn’t disqualify them! A professional cleaning can dramatically improve your senior pet’s quality of life.

This upcoming National Pet Dental Health Month, help your senior pet age more comfortably by scheduling their dental procedure with us. Call us today to book!

Pet Dental Facts🦷🪥

Did you know these facts about pet dental hygiene?

- About 80% of dogs and 70% of cats have periodontal disease by just the age of 2
- Doggy and kitty breath is actually not normal, and could actually be a sign of poor dental health, pain and inflammation in your furry friend
- Periodontal diseases are the most commonly diagnosed conditions amongst pets

Despite being so important, a pet’s dental health is often overlooked when owners consider their pet’s overall well-being, meaning that chronic pain and inflammation could be happening right under your nose! Our goal at [Hospital Name] is to change that, and help you become the best friend and owner for your pets! Taking the necessary steps at home that mentioned in our last dental post, and bringing your pet in for a dental cleaning during their wellness exams can help make healthy smiles and a happier pet.

🥶❄️ Cold Weather Alert! ❄️🥶

If you haven’t heard, freezing temperatures and a potential snowstorm are headed our way this weekend!

To help you prepare—and keep your pets warm and safe—here are a few important reminders:

🐾 Make sure you have enough pet food and extra water for 3–4 days in case of a power outage
🐾 Do not leave pets outside for extended periods in freezing temps
🐾 If you have outdoor pets (especially cats), bring them inside starting Friday evening
🐾 Check your pet’s paw pads after being outdoors—wet snow can stick, freeze into clumps, and cause discomfort
🐾 Keep clean blankets and towels handy to help dry and warm them up

Your Pet's Diet

Your pet’s food fuels their energy, vitality, and overall health—but selecting the right diet (and feeding proper portions) can be overwhelming. Your veterinarian can help you determine the best food for your dog or cat by assessing their age, overall health, body condition score (similar to a human body mass index or BMI), and lifestyle/energy requirements.

Feed your pet’s appetite for life—and their lifelong health—with veterinarian-recommended nutrition!

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. reminded us that “Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve.”

Today, we reflect on his legacy and recommit ourselves to serving our community with care, respect, and compassion — one pet at a time. We honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his commitment to kindness, service, and equality.

At Bridgewater Veterinary Hospital, we believe compassion makes a difference — for people, pets, and our community

At Home Dental Care

Just like us, our pets’ teeth need to be taken care of on a normal basis as well. And, tooth be told, who doesn’t love a good smile?

Whether you’re at the vet or at home, there are plenty of ways to care for your pet’s pearly whites to help them have the healthiest smile possible! Here are a few ways you can do just that:

🪥Brush their teeth. Yup, the same way we do! Get your pet a toothbrush and some toothpaste specifically made for them and get brushing. This can take some getting used to, so ease them into the routine. Start by brushing just a few teeth for a few seconds, then gradually work your way through brushing all teeth.
🦷Give them a (dental) treat approved by the Veterinary Oral Health Council. The Council collects data showing that these approved treats actually work to decrease tartar accumulation. There are plenty of great dental treats out there that may be a little more enjoyable (and more appreciated) by your furry friend.
🪥Choose a chew approved by the Veterinary Oral Health Council. There are numerous options when it comes to chews, but the act of chewing or gnawing can actually do a great job at keeping your pet’s teeth clean and healthy.
🦷Dental cleanings. Bringing your pet in for a dental cleaning is a great way to promote a healthy smile. During your appointment, your vet can check for anything in your pet’s mouth that may need some extra care or attention while doing the cleaning.
