Bridgewater Retirement Community

Bridgewater Retirement Community Discover "energy for life" in a community that provides the support and opportunities to live your retirement to the fullest.

What we love at BRC is our sense of community. Enjoying the feel of small-town living, while maintaining our connections with the greater community is what makes Bridgewater Retirement Community such a great place to live. It's that welcome feeling you get when your neighbor greets you, when team members know your name. We are a comfortable neighborhood where senior adults (55 plus) can enjoy the benefits of small-town living while enjoying the freedom to make the most of retirement. The wide variety of housing and healthcare options in this lively Life Plan Community allows you to relax in the beauty of the Shenandoah Valley while remaining a close travel distance to the attractions of Richmond, Charlottesville, Roanoke, Washington DC, and other metropolitan areas. Set aside home maintenance and lawn care and free up time for your family, friends, and the pastimes you cherish. At BRC, you'll discover a wide variety of maintenance-free apartments, cottages, and cluster homes, set in gently winding streets with mature trees and beautiful landscaping. We've never lost that "old-fashioned" sense of neighborhood. People share an easy fellowship, caring about one another and enjoying activities when they choose. Best of all, living here lets you enjoy peace of mind, knowing you've secured your future in a comfortable, friendly community.

Every team member at BRC begins their journey in Culture University (affectionately known as Culture U)—a two-day BRC Beginnings orientation designed to help new team members deeply understand who we are, what we value, and who we serve before stepping into on-the-job training.

That spirit of culture and connection inspired the BRC Foundation, our Human Resources Team, and .art as they envisioned a mural for this special space. Spoiler alert: they nailed it!

The Foundation recently hosted a special unveiling for donors who have supported the Work Well Fund, because thanks to their generosity, this space continues to be an investment in our incredible team members. Over the past six weeks (and roughly 250 hours of painting!), residents and team members have stopped by to watch the progress—now complete just in time for our first BRC Beginnings in the finished space!

🎨 Fun fact: Every color you see in this mural was individually mixed and crafted by hand, creating a one-of-a-kind visual story that truly embodies the energy and vibrance of our unique culture.

☕ Vendor Spotlight: Sweet as Honey Coffee 🐝

As we wrap up another wildly successful season of our Farmer’s Market, we’re celebrating one last vendor spotlight—and this one’s extra sweet!

Our final market for the season marked the first visit from Sweet as Honey Coffee, a new local favorite we recently read about as they opened their coffee truck in Staunton. We love partnering with local businesses, so inviting them to join us just made sense—and we’re so glad we did! They had a busy, successful first market, serving up smiles (and caffeine!) to residents, team members, and community guests alike. ☕💛

This year’s Farmer’s Market season was our biggest yet—one market even featured nearly 20 vendors, thanks to the generous support of our donors and the enthusiasm of our community. Here’s to another incredible season in the books—and to dreaming up what next year’s markets will bring! 🌻

Our annual Alzheimer’s Walk filled our beautiful, fall campus today with team members, residents, families, community friends, and ! What an incredible turnout it was—more than 300 participants signed up, helping us reach our $10,000 goal! 🙌🌤️

The colorful garden of promise flowers told powerful stories: purple for those lost to Alzheimer’s, yellow for caregivers, blue for those living with the disease, and orange for supporters—all coming together with one shared hope: a world without Alzheimer’s. It was the perfect day for a walk, laughter, and connection. Thank you to everyone who organized or joined us to help make this day so special. 💜💛💙🧡

💡 Innovation in Action: Advancing Resident Health at BRC 💡

We recently announced an exciting innovation grant to develop our own Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) program—an idea brought forward by two of our talented Speech-Language Pathologists, Patrick Massey and Abigail Koller! 👏

This new in-house program will enhance resident health, safety, and quality of life by allowing our Therapy Team to provide on-site, evidence-based evaluations for swallowing and voice disorders—eliminating the need for off-site appointments or long waits for contracted services.

We’re now thrilled to share that Patrick and Abigail recently completed their hands-on training at Johns Hopkins Medical Center in Baltimore, MD, gaining valuable experience performing evaluations and perfecting their techniques. Their dedication and teamwork are helping us continue to raise the bar in resident-centered care. 💙

A heartfelt thank-you goes out to our generous donors, whose support makes innovative ideas like this possible and helps us bring meaningful advancements to life for our residents. 🙏

Next up: learning the ins and outs of our own scope equipment and continuing to build the program right here on campus!

🌻 From Summer Blooms to Fall Harvests 🍂

As we say farewell to summer and welcome the beauty of fall, we want to take a moment to celebrate and thank everyone who made our inaugural year at the Community Garden such a wonderful success! 🌱💚

Our dedicated volunteer mowers kept the grounds looking beautiful all summer long—thank you to Sam Moore, Gary Creasy, Roger Bible, and Rose Wells for your steady care and hard work.

Each week, our cut flower group brightened Custer Dining Room with gorgeous floral arrangements—heartfelt thanks to Karen Shiflet, Ann Marie Leonard, Rose Wells, Bev Moore, Toni Stone, Mary McAvoy, and Rebecca Huffman for sharing your time and creativity. 🌸

A special shoutout to Judy Ryman, whose tireless weeding (both inside and outside the fence!) kept our beds thriving all season long—we couldn’t have done it without you! 🌿

We also want to recognize all who took part in this first growing season—our amazing resident gardeners:
Rose Wells, Roger Bible, Gary & Susan Creasy, Doug & Julie Chismar, Fred Grunder, Tim Hulings, and Becky Driver,

and our wonderful team members:
Anne O’Donohue, Anne Whitney Flint, Karyn Posey, Faith Cayton, and Haggi Molalenge.

Finally, a huge thank you to our student volunteers from Rockingham County Public Schools - VA's Helping Hands Service Camp and Turner Ashby High School's Day of Service for lending their energy and enthusiasm! 🌞

This garden grew much more than flowers and vegetables—it grew teamwork, community, and joy. Here’s to our first successful season… and to even more growth ahead! 🌻🌾

We sure have been busy having loads of fun—kayaking the North River right here in town 🛶, riding the rails through the mountains of West Virginia 🚂, rafting the South Fork River in Port Republic 🌊, visiting Raspberry Ridge Farm for some pumpkin and gourd fun 🎃, and joining for an electric bike demo that had everyone smiling! 🚲

To top it all off, we wrapped up the week with our annual Health Fair—a perfect finish to a week full of energy, connection, and community. 💙

We owe a huge thanks to Derek at Outdoor Adventure Experiences, Inc. for helping make our recent outdoor adventures possible, and to everyone who joined in the fun! 🙌

🚤 Last week, we took our second overnight trip to Smith Mountain Lake—and what a blast it was! This year we had an even bigger group of residents, with two days and nights full of rotating fun:

✨ Multiple boat rides
✨ Sunshine (and even a little rain)
✨ Smiles for days
✨ Delicious food
✨ S’mores by the campfire
✨ And plenty of card games

Our residents couldn’t stop talking about how much fun they were having! Trips like this are only possible thanks to the generosity of our donors, and we are so grateful for the memories they help us create.

Stay tuned for our next big idea… a camping trip is coming soon! 🏕️🌲

🌱 Farmer's Market Vendor Spotlight🍴

Even though last week’s Farmer’s Market was rained out, we still want to shine a light on one of our regular vendors—our very own dining team, who shows up at every market and helps make it a place of connection, creativity, and flavor!

They’re more than just great chefs and bakers—you’ll often find them at the market selling fresh local produce and sharing recipes through live demos and tastings. This season, they’re also introducing an exciting new initiative that’s close to our hearts: Good Roots.

✨ Good Roots is about nourishing our community in body, mind, and spirit—supporting local growers, creating meaningful connections, and celebrating the joy of good food together.

This past weekend was a truly special one for our residents Doug, Eddy, and John! They joined the Honor Flight Top of Virginia to Washington, D.C.—a program that honors veterans by bringing them to visit the memorials built in recognition of their service.

What an honor for us to see these gentlemen take part in such a powerful day of remembrance and gratitude. Their courage and dedication continue to inspire us all. 💙
