Last week Lisa had an encounter with a young homeless man (not more than a boy really) holding his pet rabbit.
She and her companion took the time to talk to the young fellow.
Funny how that is all that is really required!
It is hard to sit with a homeless person.
In most social situations, there is some kind of commonality we can cling to But, when you are talking to someone with whom you not only have nothing in common, but are living your worst nightmare...
What do you do?
Well, in the most simplest of terms, you open your heart to at least wanting to make some kind of Loving Connection.
It isn't just the homeless, the desitute. They are just the most obvious.
It is the cashier at the grocery store, the clerk in DMV. It's the person standing out in the cold with the sign that says, "Slow - Construction Ahead."
It's your wife, your husband, your child, your coworker... anyone in your life really.
A woman made the long and tiring journey from Chicago to Calcutta to work with Mother Teresa in one of her shelters. When she arrived and had a chance to talk to the Mother she told her that she had traveled all the way from Chicago to help the people there.
Teresa's gentle response was, simple and full of compassion, "Oh dear, is there no one in Chicago that needs your help?"
Look around.
Those in need are everywhere.
Some are obvious.
Some quite hidden.
Some are right in your own home.
