Last week Lisa had an encounter with a young homeless man (not more than a boy really) holding his pet rabbit.

She and her companion took the time to talk to the young fellow.

Funny how that is all that is really required!

It is hard to sit with a homeless person.

In most social situations, there is some kind of commonality we can cling to But, when you are talking to someone with whom you not only have nothing in common, but are living your worst nightmare...

What do you do?

Well, in the most simplest of terms, you open your heart to at least wanting to make some kind of Loving Connection.

It isn't just the homeless, the desitute. They are just the most obvious.

It is the cashier at the grocery store, the clerk in DMV. It's the person standing out in the cold with the sign that says, "Slow - Construction Ahead."

It's your wife, your husband, your child, your coworker... anyone in your life really.

A woman made the long and tiring journey from Chicago to Calcutta to work with Mother Teresa in one of her shelters. When she arrived and had a chance to talk to the Mother she told her that she had traveled all the way from Chicago to help the people there.

Teresa's gentle response was, simple and full of compassion, "Oh dear, is there no one in Chicago that needs your help?"

Look around.
Those in need are everywhere.
Some are obvious.
Some quite hidden.
Some are right in your own home.

In this weeke's episode of OM School Live we take up a subject that has caused many, many people a lot of misery and unnecessary failure.

PERFECTIONISM!

Perfectionism is a direct result of not being "good enough" as a child.

Early on we get this notion planted in us that If only I was better then:
Mommy and/or Daddy will really love/approve of me
I will get all my needs met
Daddy will stop yelling, drinking, pay attention to me

Then later that turns into:
The boss will approve of me
I'll get the man or woman of my dreams
I'll be a success
People will like me

There is this deep, unconscious story running that, if I can just be good enough (aka perfect) then I will be worthy of life's goodies.

Masking a deep sense of unworthiness and shame, we set impossibly high standards, that we can't possibly achIEve. That serves to keep up "safe" by keeping us waiting in the wings, until our gift to contribute measures up to this unreachable standard.

But there is a way out of this... and it is not by becoming any better than you already are.

This is what we will be talking about on this week's episode of OM School Live. Today January 23 at noon Eastern time at https://youtube.com/gpwalsh/streams.

“How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.” - Winnie the Pooh

Coming to peace about an irrecoverable lost is the most difficult thing a human being can face.
We naturally bond with one another. Which means our lives, our emotions, our minds, and a million subtle interconnections get established and maintained, often for years. In so many ways we, quite literally become one with others.

But the reality of all life is that it is impermanent.

Nothing lasts forever and, at some point, even that which has been there seemingly forever, will be gone.

But there is an upside to grief. As the great philosopher, Winnie the Pooh aptly pointed out, “How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.”

To the degree that we love, we will grieve. It is a pure expression of the value of another, the meaning and richness they brought into your life and a testament to the quality of your life...

“The mind is by nature restless. Begin liberating it from its restlessness; give it peace, make it free from distractions, train it to look inward, and make all this a habit." - Ramana Maharshi

How does one practice spirituality? It is a big question. There are so many options, so many differing approaches, so many competing points of view.

As someone who has a lot of videos on YouTube and gets lots of comments, I can attest to the wide range of ideas that are presented, some with great conviction and fervor. In the market place of ideas we can easily be overwhelmed by the sheer number of choices and endless stream of "latest and greatest."
But the questions I get more most often of all is the question "HOW TO?"

How do I awaken?
How do I meditate?
How can I heal this?
How can I deal with my family, boyfriend, spouse, children, ex-spouse, employer, life situations of all kinds?

Arrrrrggggg, where do I start?

OK, this is just one blog and one episode of OM School Live, so I can't address all of this in one sitting.

So I am going to start with, what to me, is the most essential of all beginning practices.

It is the essence of meditation
It is the essence of energy healing
It is even the essence of personal development...
