🔥 Structure Fire – Vardon Road 🔥

At around 2:00 p.m. on Monday, October 20th, Brigantine firefighters responded to a structure fire on Vardon Road after an off-duty member reported heavy smoke and flames visible across the golf course.

Crews arrived to find heavy fire conditions at the rear of the home with flames threatening nearby houses. A second and third alarm were struck to bring in additional resources. Firefighters quickly established a water supply and deployed multiple hose lines to stop the spread. The main home sustained significant damage, while two nearby homes suffered only minor exterior damage.

Firefighters from Brigantine Professional Firefighters IAFF Local 2657 and Atlantic City Fire Department worked together to bring the fire under control at 2:58 p.m. Galloway EMS provided firefighter rehab on scene, and Absecon Fire Department staffed Station 1 to cover additional calls during the incident.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Brigantine Fire and EMS Department.

A sincere thank you to all of our mutual aid partners, BBrigantine Police Department Dispatchers and Atlantic County Fire Coordinators for their teamwork and quick response in preventing a greater loss. 🙏

🔥 Brigantine Firefighters Train at Annual Live Burn 🔥

This week, Brigantine Firefighters participated in their annual live burn training at the Atlantic County Fire Academy. This hands-on training allows our crews to sharpen their firefighting skills in realistic fire conditions — ensuring we’re always ready to protect our community.

We were also joined by students from BCC News Channel along with Kelly Lentz from Brigantine Living who observed the training and interviewed our firefighters about the importance of fire safety and ongoing training.

🔥 October is Fire Prevention Month! 🔥

The Brigantine Fire & EMS Department is proud to promote fire safety and prevention all month long. Protecting our community starts with knowledge and action — and this year’s Fire Prevention Week (Oct 5–11, 2025) theme is:

⚡ “Charge into Fire Safety™: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home.” ⚡

This week, our firefighters and EMTs will be visiting Brigantine Community School, leading students through hands-on lessons that start with their school fire drill. We’ll talk about what to do when the alarm sounds, how to stay calm, and why knowing your escape plan at school — and at home — is so important.

Every student will also bring home a “Firefighter Jack Wants to Know, What’s Our Plan?” activity bag to spark a family conversation about your home fire escape plan. When you see it in your child’s backpack, take a few minutes to talk it through — because every second counts!

🔥 Home Fire Safety Reminders:
✅ Fire Won’t Wait — Plan Your Escape (know two ways out of every room)
✅ Hear the Beep Where You Sleep (test smoke alarms regularly)
✅ Get Out & Stay Out (never go back inside)
✅ Go to Your Meeting Place & Call 911

🔋 Lithium-Ion Battery Safety Tips:

Use only certified chargers and batteries with a safety mark (UL, ETL, or CSA)

Charge devices on hard, flat surfaces away from bedding or furniture

Never charge while sleeping or when you’re not home

Stop using batteries that overheat, swell, or leak

Recycle old or damaged batteries properly — never throw them in the trash

Let’s charge into fire safety together, Brigantine!
Stay smart. Stay safe. 🔥

You may have noticed some work happening at Station 1 this week. We are replacing the last remaining section of the original firehouse apron. First poured in 1973 when the station was built, this section was originally outdoors and never intended to handle the weight of today’s fire apparatus.

In the last photo, you’ll see the police cars parked outside—this is the front, interior portion of the firehouse where the project is underway.

This important investment from the City ensures that Station 1 will continue to support the Department’s mission for the next 50 years.

Earlier this week, several members of the Brigantine Fire and EMS Department took part in Marine Rescue Vehicle (MRV) training with Bobby Bechtel from Downbeach Native. Training was held right here in Brigantine in 3–4 foot surf from Hurricane Gabrielle, giving our team real-world conditions to practice in.

Rescue evolutions focused on single-rescuer (driver only) and dual-rescuer (driver/swimmer) operations for conscious, unconscious, and multiple victims. Members also received instruction on operating rescue jetskis in large, heavy surf conditions.

Now that lifeguard season is over, water rescues become the sole responsibility of the fire and EMS department. With fall storms bringing rough surf and strong rip currents, this type of training helps make sure our team is confident, prepared, and ready to respond when needed.

🚨 Dive Team Assist 🚨

Earlier today, the Brigantine Dive Team responded to a request from the U.S. Coast Guard to help recover a small boat anchor that was lost during a weekend training exercise behind Harrah’s Casino in Atlantic City. The anchor had become lodged in an underwater obstruction, forcing the crew to cut it loose and mark the spot with a buoy for later retrieval.

In 20 feet of water with zero visibility, A/LT Cooker successfully located and freed the anchor, which was then lifted back aboard the Coast Guard vessel.

These recovery operations provide excellent real-world training opportunities for our divers in controlled, non-emergency situations. They also strengthen teamwork and reinforce our strong working relationship with neighboring federal partners. Great work by all involved! 👏🌊⚓️
