❄️ Wet Snow Shoveling Safety Tips ❄️

Wet snow is heavy snow — and it can put serious strain on your heart and back. As you head out to clear driveways and sidewalks, please keep safety in mind:

• Take it slow. Shovel small amounts at a time.
• Push snow instead of lifting whenever possible.
• Bend your knees, not your back.
• Take frequent breaks and don’t overexert yourself.
• Stay hydrated.
• Dress in layers and wear boots with good traction.
• Know your limits. If you have heart conditions or health concerns, consider asking for help.

⚠️ If you experience chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, or nausea — stop immediately and call 911.

🚒 Adopt a Hydrant!
If you’re able, please clear at least 3 feet around nearby fire hydrants and a path to the street. Quick access to hydrants can make a critical difference during an emergency.

Let’s work together to stay safe and injury-free during this storm. Check on your neighbors, especially seniors, and lend a hand if you can.

Stay safe, Brigantine!

🚒❄️ Please Help Keep Fire Hydrants Clear ❄️🚒

As you clear snow from your property, please take a moment to clear around any nearby fire hydrants. A 3-foot space around the hydrant and a path to the street can make a big difference in an emergency and helps protect the entire neighborhood.

🚫 Just as important — do NOT pile, blow, or plow snow on top of hydrants.

Thank you for helping keep our community safe!

🚨STRUCTURE FIRE:🚨

While responding to a reported water leak, firefighters were diverted to a report of a fire burning against the rear of a residence. The homeowners attempted to extinguish the fire with a fire extinguisher but were unsuccessful.

Alpha Platoon arrived and quickly extinguished the fire at its area of origin. No injuries were reported, and damage was limited to the exterior area where the fire started. The occupant is able to remain in the home.

The incident is currently under investigation.

Cold temps = real-world training ❄️🚒

The Brigantine Fire & EMS Department took advantage of the frozen bays to conduct ice rescue training. Members practiced self-rescue techniques, victim removal, and working as a team in challenging winter conditions. Training like this helps ensure we’re prepared to respond quickly and safely when seconds matter. Stay safe out there!

🚒 Fire Hydrant Safety Reminder ❄️

It has come to the attention of the Fire & EMS Department that fire hydrants are being covered by snow and ice during snow removal—most commonly at commercial properties.

Please do not pile snow on or around fire hydrants. These hydrants are critical for firefighters to quickly access water during an emergency. Snow-covered fire hydrants endanger the entire neighborhood by delaying fire suppression and increasing the risk to lives and property.

Per national firefighting regulations, clearing fire hydrants during snow removal is the responsibility of both the contractor and the property owner and burying a hydrant could create liabilities and responsibilities for hydrant repairs and avoidable injuries. Please do your part and protect your neighbors!

Our Fire & EMS Department already operates with limited manpower. Buried fire hydrants place an unnecessary physical burden on firefighters and slow emergency operations when seconds matter.

✅ Please keep at least 3 feet of clearance around all fire hydrants.
Thank you for helping keep our community safe.

🚨 Thin Ice Warning 🚨

Cold temps don’t mean safe ice. No ice is safe ice.
Tidal ponds and waterways are especially dangerous — moving water creates voids and weak spots under the ice, causing it to give way without warning.

What looks solid can fail in seconds. Please stay off frozen ponds, lagoons, and waterways and keep kids and pets away.

When in doubt, stay out. ❄️⚠️
