A sit down with the Chief of Sports Medicine at NEBH and NESEC, Dr. Glen Ross.

"Finally able to get back to Invictus CrossFit for my first post pandemic interval workout. I almost forgot what a great and efficient session it is. There is a misconception that these training programs are "bad" for your shoulders !! While that can happen, with professional instructors, and some basic education the risk can be greatly reduced. For us "older" participants, the ego HAS to be checked at the door! Stay in a reasonable range of weight and reps, and "live to fight another day !!" Think of the recommended routine as a starting point to move up or down from as needed. For the shoulders, remember that pulling (lats, bands, row, etc.) is generally much safer and productive than pushing (bench, military press, etc.). Learn to minimize, or avoid, aggravating techniques, especially as you age.
I have been with Invictus for 8 years without a serious injury. Many thanks to Matt Freda, US Navy PO2 for his expert supervision. As a retired Navy officer, and surgeon, it is a priority for me to maintain good physical conditioning to function well and take care of my patients. Strong work By Josh Plosker, Bern Prince, Ryan, Justin, Dan, and the whole Invictus crew for putting together well thought out programs in a clean, safe, environment, to allow us optimal performance. These guys are good, and they care."

In a recent article published in the Orthopaedic Journal of Sports Medicine, a team of researchers, including NESEC surgeon Dr. Sarav Shah, describe a High Prevalence of Superior Labral Anterior-Posterior Tears Associated with Acute Acromioclavicular Joint Separation of All Injury Grades. "The high prevalence of Intra-articular pathologies in low-grade separation in our study was unexpected and suggests that a thorough evaluation and clinical follow-up for patients with all grades of AC separation may be beneficial." says Dr. Shah.

In a recent review article published in Current Reviews in Musculoskeletal Medicine, a team of researchers including NESEC surgeon Sarav Shah describe Scapular Dyskinesis and the Kinetic Chain in the context of recognizing dysfunction and treating injury in the Tennis Athlete. "Although shoulder pain in the overhead athletes is often multi-factorial, early recognition and treatment of scapular dyskinesis generally carry a favorable prognosis and result in improved patient outcomes." says Dr. Shah.

In a commentary published in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, NESEC Surgeon Dr. Sarav Shah discusses treatment choices for symptomatic rotator cuff tears and the importance of a shared decision-making model. “This study is important in patient education and counseling as we Orthopaedic surgeons continue to strive for each individual patient to have the most prudent options available for measured success. Data from this study can be used to inform patients about expectations for surgical treatment compared with nonoperative treatment and, thus, can be applicable to patient education and care,” explained Dr. Shah.

Recently, two studies have been published that has brought to light validating what many of us surgeons have thought for years. Corticosteroid injections may do more harm than good.
