Let’s talk about grape juice + the stomach bug 🍇🤢

You may have heard that grape juice can “kill” the stomach bug. I get why this idea stuck around… grape juice has antioxidants and it sounds like it should help.

But here’s the truth:

By the time vomiting or diarrhea starts, the virus is already inside the gut cells. Drinking grape juice can’t reach or eliminate it. In fact, because grape juice is high in natural sugar, it can actually pull more water into the intestines and make diarrhea worse, especially in kids.

So while grape juice isn’t “bad,” it’s not a treatment for a stomach bug and early on, it can backfire.

What to do instead (this really matters):

✔️ Hydration first, always
Small, frequent sips of fluids with electrolytes are key. Think oral rehydration solutions or diluted electrolyte drinks. Slow and steady wins here. (More on this to come..and why ONLY water is a no go. You need sodium)

✔️ Give the gut a break
Bland foods only once vomiting settles. No rushing meals.

✔️ Support the gut, don’t stress it
Some families find gentle probiotics helpful during recovery. Ginger can help calm nausea for older kids and adults.

✔️ Rest + time
Most stomach bugs run their course in 24–72 hours. It’s frustrating, but the body does know what to do.

When kids are sick, less sugar and more gentle hydration is the way to go 💧

You’re not doing anything wrong. There is just a lot of outdated advice floating around. We’ve all been there 🤍 and I have to admit, I love a good glass of grape juice from time to time! ( I craved it when I was pregnant 😂)
