Judit Balbi was 15 years old and living in the Dominican Republic when she started noticing changes in her health. “I was getting so thirsty, and I had lost a lot of weight,” she remembers. Judit’s mother took her to the doctor, where she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.

Years later, after moving to Boston and building a life with her husband, Judit experienced many obstacles to motherhood. After three miscarriages and one ectopic pregnancy, she became pregnant again in 2016. At just 16 weeks, her water suddenly broke and she was rushed to the emergency department at Boston Medical Center – Brighton.

“They asked me why I was having so many miscarriages, which I really appreciated, because no one had ever asked me that before,” recalls Judit. The next day, she met with Dr. Lucy Bayer-Zwirello, a high-risk pregnancy expert at BMC Brighton. “She hugged me and said, ‘Everything is going to be okay. We’re going to take care of you.’” For the first time, Judit felt hope.

Through expert monitoring, an insulin pump, and constant support, Judit gave birth to her first child, Ryan. Two more complicated pregnancies followed, but with her care team by her side, Judit became the proud mom of three: Ryan, James, and Eddit. Looking back, she credits faith, family, and her care team’s dedication for helping her achieve her dream.

September is Addiction Recovery Month, a time to recognize the strength of individuals in recovery and the dedicated teams who stand alongside them.

At BMC Brighton, our Comprehensive Addiction Program team knows that everyone has a story—and every story deserves to be heard. With compassion, respect, and personalized support, they provide counseling, treatment, and ongoing guidance that empowers patients to build healthy and meaningful futures. Their holistic approach ensures that care extends beyond treatment, supporting patients in every step of their recovery journey.

We met Isabella, a Mental Health Counselor on the team. When we asked about her work, she shared:
"I love working in a place where I feel I can make an impact. My favorite part of my job is getting to hear my patients' stories and help them work toward their goals in recovery."

This Recovery Month, we honor Isabella and the entire Comprehensive Addiction Program team for dedicating each day to shaping brighter futures for our patients.

Today, we are shining a light on our Fall Prevention Committee at BMC Brighton, which is dedicated to helping older adults and their families stay safe and supported.

Here are 3 ways to help prevent falls:

1. Stay active – Gentle activities like walking, swimming, or tai chi can improve balance, coordination, and strength.

2. Fall-proof your home – Remove hazards such as loose rugs and clutter, and consider adding handrails in key areas.

3. Talk with your doctor – Always share if you’ve had a fall, even a small one. It can help uncover health or medication issues that may be addressed.

Together, we can reduce our risk of injury and lead healthier lives.

This National Surgical Oncologist Day, we’re proud to recognize Michael O'Connor, MD, a thoracic surgeon at BMC Brighton who treats both cancerous and non-cancerous conditions of the lung, chest, and esophagus.

O’Connor and team helped play a role in bringing Da Vinci 5 (DV5), Intuitive Surgical’s most advanced robotic surgical system, to BMC Brighton. This makes BMC Brighton one of only five hospitals in New England to use the technology. For patients, this means shorter operating times and faster recoveries.
