First day back to school, evening edition!

So grateful to be back in this inviting space with these beautiful ladies. Restorative Yoga and Lectio Divina pair together so beautifully! This fall’s series is inspired by Jennifer Tucker’s devotional, Present in Prayer. And Paul’s words in Philippians 4:8…

“Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.”

“Finally brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable—if there is any moral excellence and if there is any praise—dwell on these things.”
Philippians 4:8 HCSB

It is a biblical principle, but also one accepted by the mainstream. Some phrases that come to mind are “the power of positivity” and “your vibe attracts your tribe.” The science of neuroplasticity has shown that we can rewire our brains by changing the way we think. In Proverbs 4:23 CEB we are told “More than anything you guard, protect your mind, for life flows from it.” And in Philippians 4:8, Paul tells us the specific types of things that we should spend our time thinking about!

My fall series starts September 5th, and is designed to lead us into a place where we can fix our minds upon these things, and in so doing, rest in the presence of God. Won't you join me?

✨Monday Meditation✨

"The ultimate freedom we have as individuals is the power to select what we allow or require our minds to dwell upon and think about...The focus of your thoughts significantly affects everything else that happens in your life and evokes the feelings that frame your world and motivate your actions." Dallas Willard, Life Without Lack

And in the words of AW Tozer, "What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us."

Take a few moments to allow this breath prayer from Psalm 23 to guide your thoughts.
Inhale "The Lord is my Shepherd."
Exhale "I have all that I need."

I have two spots left in my next series "Life Without Lack." Join me for eight weeks as we rest in the truths of God's provision. Link to join in bio/on my website.

“Oh! May the God of green hope fill you up with joy, fill you up with peace, so that your believing lives, filled with the life-giving energy of the Holy Spirit, will brim over with hope!”
Romans 15:13 MSG

I was reminded of this version of one of my favorite verses recently as I was noticing the subtle hints of green beginning to appear in our pastures. Springtime is upon us! When you think of the color green and the season of spring, what comes to mind for you? For me it is a reminder of the promise of new life after the dormancy of winter (physical or spiritual). The season of winter can feel dark, cold, barren, even hopeless, but winter seasons have a purpose. They provide a time of rest, and a renewing of energy for the preparation of the new growth of spring.

As I spend time in nature, I sense it - I hear it in the song of the birds, see it in the hints of green and forming buds, in the smells of blossoms when they bloom and I feel the warmth of the sun and breeze on my skin. In a word, what I sense as this season enters is ABUNDANCE. We can take in with our physical senses what our spiritual senses already knew. Our God is a God of abundance.

Just after the account of the last supper, it is recorded:
“Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.” Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.” Matthew 26:36-39 NIV

On his way to fulfill his destiny, Jesus experienced overwhelming sorrow. His knowledge of where he was going did not eliminate the struggle. But his struggle and sorrow did not equal sin. Are you prone to resist the times when you face sorrow or struggle with the circumstances of your life, questioning as to how they could be God’s will for you? How does the fact that Jesus struggled too help with your acceptance of your circumstances? Sit in this breath prayer for a time, imagining yourself with Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane.

Inhale: "Not as I will"
Exhale: "But as You will"

Here's a quick little meditation you can do instead of a typical breath prayer. This is Psalm 46:10, with a reduction of words with each recitation. Mentally recite the words as you take a breath, and then take several rounds of breath between each phrase. Breathe deep into the belly through the nose and shoot for a count of four on both the inhale and exhale. It can be helpful to start with the counted breath to get the rhythm, and then move to your meditation.

Give it a try and let me know how it goes!

How's your balance?
I read recently that the ability to balance on one foot for at least 10 seconds is a good indicator of lifespan and overall health.

But when I ask that, I don't just mean standing on one foot. Work and play, activity and rest, solitude and community. These things are instrumental to living a balanced and fulfilling life.

Join me April 12th, 9:30-noon, as we explore these concepts as well as work on developing our physical balance. Link to sign up is in my bio/on my website. I'll also put the direct link in my comments.

Oh, and can you pass the 10 second test?

In like a lion, out like a lamb…March is a month known for instability. As we transition from winter to spring, the weather patterns can be anything but predictable. We are teased with a warm day with gentle breezes and bountiful sunshine, and think spring is upon us. The next day the winds are howling and we are reaching for our winter gear once again.

It got me thinking about how the breath of God initiates change as well. The words used for breath in the Bible translate several ways. They can mean breath, but they also can mean wind and spirit. This is one of the first things I learned when I began my yoga teacher training and pondering the mystery never gets old for me.

Genesis 2:7 tells us, “Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.” God’s breath was the thing that transformed the unliving to living. It is His breath, His Spirit…His wind of change…that brings life from death. It is His Spirit that brings transformation. If we are mindful, we can experience God’s wind of change several times a minute through the practice of breath prayer.
