At 2 weeks post-treatment, it is completely normal to still see:
• Mild to moderate redness
• A “pink” appearance in the treated area

NOT ALL DISCOLORATION IS DARK SPOTS

Most people think pigmentation problems mean hyperpigmentation — dark spots or patches.

But sometimes the opposite happens.

The skin can actually lose pigment, leaving lighter areas behind. This is called post-inflammatory hypopigmentation.

It happens when inflammation disrupts the skin’s melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing melanin.

Why this happens

Post-inflammatory hypopigmentation can occur after:

• Acne or cystic breakouts
• Skin trauma / burns / severe sunburn
• Aggressive chemical peels or treatments
• Incorrect laser or energy settings
• Infection or inflammation in the skin
• Over-exfoliation or irritation
• Certain dermatologic procedures

Sometimes it’s temporary

In some cases the melanocytes are still present but temporarily inhibited.

When that happens, pigment may gradually return as the skin regenerates.

Treatments that can help stimulate recovery may include:

• Microneedling
• PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma)
• PDRN regenerative therapy
• Collagen-stimulating treatments
• Controlled resurfacing

The goal is to encourage healthy cellular repair and melanocyte activity without creating further inflammation.

Many times it can be permanent

In other cases the melanocytes were destroyed, not just suppressed.

Signs this may be permanent include:

• The area does not tan in the sun, even years later
• The patch has remained unchanged for long periods of time
• The original injury was deep or aggressive
• There is no pigment response at all

Why proper diagnosis matters

Not all discoloration should be treated the same way.

Some conditions involve too much pigment, while others involve too little or no pigment at all.

Using the wrong treatment approach can actually make the contrast worse.
