Not all structural deformities need a ‘surgical fix’. In fact, sometimes the risks outweigh the benefits.
-
There are usually conservative options to explore; padding and splinting, accommodative shoes, callus and nail debridement are often enough to treat painful symptoms associated with bunions and hammertoes.

Many of the surgeries we perform are done in the office.

One of the most frequently asked questions regarding ingrown nail surgery is whether or not, once removed, the ingrown nail will return. The short answer no, not likely, IF phenol is applied afterward to the matrix (or root) of the nail.
-
Phenol is a weak organic acid and when applied (see photo on how it is applied) to the matrix is the definitive method of reducing the width of the nail plate and lessening the chances of recurrence. The chemical does create a small chemical burn afterward, but that usually heals in a week or so.

Foot and ankle disorders including flatfeet, ligamentous injuries, arthritis, bunions, and hammertoes are well-demonstrated on weightbearing x-rays but may be underestimated or not appreciated at all on non-weightbearing x-rays.
-
Whenever possible, weightbearing x-rays of the foot and ankle are preferred in order to give the most accurate assessment of the functional bony anatomy of the foot and ankle.

Over time, diabetes may cause you to lose feeling in your feet. A decrease or loss of sensation is the single greatest risk factor for diabetic ulceration. Visually inspecting your feet daily will help you spot problems early, before they get worse.
-
Pictured are a couple of problem areas to inspect: Look for redness, callusing and discolored skin on the tips of your toes. Check for bony prominences, fissuring and calluses under the ball of your foot.
