When I make comments on bringing oyster culture back, it's not that we don't have oyster culture here in Rhode Island. We do. We have people who love to eat oysters all over the state.
But then I see a beautiful shindig that recently happened and oysters were mentioned. But guess where those oysters came from? Massachusetts. Granted, the oyster farm they came from are known for great oysters. But we have plenty of farmers here in Rhode Island who raise just as good if not better oysters. And yet, many event planners here in Rhode Island will not support their local oyster farmers. Instead choosing to use the "trendy" farm. It hurts a little more knowing there are at least four farms within a 30 minute drive of those mansions that have catering licenses and were more than capable of providing that service.
So today, on national oyster day, if you live in the state of Rhode Island, I would implore you when you go out for oysters, if they're not serving Rhode Island oysters in any capacity ask them why. We have over 80 leases in this state of people growing oysters for public consumption. We have so many wonderful farms in this state that grow incredible oysters, why would you source out of state at all?
Happy national oyster day, go out there and eat some of those delicious bivalves today!
And if you need help finding Rhode Island oysters, let me know and I will hook you up!!
