Let’s get outside!

My kids had the best time making these and it helped us log hours to ! This is our third year doing the first year we didn’t make it, last year we logged over 1000! What I love about it, is that there is really no failing, because you’re getting outside more than you probably would have even if it doesn’t add up to 1000.

☀️ Ice Sun Catcher
1. Go on a nature walk and forage some items from the woods or the road! We grabbed berries from a tree, baby pine cones, pine needles, some leaves and twigs. Aurora also found some red paper which she was insistent on adding and it turned hers pink!

2. Fill small aluminum pie plates with water about half way.

3. Gently place items in.

4. Cut a piece of string and loop it and place at the top.

4. Place outside to freeze! Once frozen pop out and hang up.

*I am sure you could use a tray around the house or a silicone muffin dish for some mini ones!

Are you doing 1000 hours outside?

One of our FAVORITE areas to target and help families with is emotional regulation.

We are firm believers in that your regulation impacts your child’s regulation early on and that teaching appropriate functional coping skills is key to long term regulation success.

Regulation before expectation. If your little one is dysregulated learning simply cannot take place.

Do you help your child regulate!? How can we help you? 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

One of the most asked questions!!

Is my child acting like XYZ because behavior or because of a sensory response? Or is it both?

Well there is not super clear cut answer but here are three key areas in which they are different.

1. Sensory behavior responses typically cause “meltdowns” rather than “tantrums”. Which means that it’s a true, ‘can’t function situation’ no matter if you give them what they want. Where as with a tantrum the behavioral response subsided almost immediately if you give them what they want, they tend to be able to flip their emotions on and off relatively quick in this situation.

2. A sensory behavior response is not goal oriented, meaning that they aren’t doing it to “get something” where as with a true behavior response to something they often do it when they are trying to get something.

3. During a sensory response the automatic nervous system is involved, things like sweating and dilated pupils can take 45-60 minutes to return to normal where as the body returns to normal in under 5 or so minutes with a behavioral response.

Remember when our bodies our overwhelmed, overstimulated, under stimulated these can all lead to behavior responses. They key factor though is that it’s due to our sensory system being unable to regulate and process!

What is your biggest sensory quirk?! 👇🏻

A book a day for the first five years means and estimated exposure to over 1.4 MILLION words before entering kindergarten!

Let that sink in.. over a million words. 1,000,000!!!

Exposure to picture book words can expand understanding of a known word, create new definitions and meanings of words that are already known, provide visual associations for meanings and general new exposure to words that may not be used conversationally by the adult/parent.

Reading exposes children to early literacy skills like:
📕 words on pages
📘 reading left to right
📗 book cover details- author, illustrator, title, etc
📙 connections between symbols, sounds and words
📚 and so much more!!!

Messy play- we love it and here’s why.

👉🏻 It is a great way to explore various textures.

👉🏻 Fosters curiosity, imagination and exploration.

👉🏻 Engages their senses at a developmental level.

👉🏻 Helps them build a sense of self.

Are you a ‘let your kid explore and make a mess’ or are you a ‘let’s keep it neat’ kind of parent? 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

It’s called the meal time dance in our house. You know the one… you make dinner, you think it’s something they like and 5 seconds into serving it (before they have even tried it) they are pushing it back to you and saying they don’t like it!

Or maybe you’ve got questions on baby led vs. purées?

Or maybe just maybe your little one can’t quite figure out their latch or you’re having trouble positioning them during nursing sessions because they have torticollis?

Whatever the reason we are here to help with feeding struggles! Book your free 15 minute consult today, the link in our profile.

ATTENTION all parents/ caregivers tiny human watchers:
Reaching milestones is not a race!! Sure the pediatrician will ask you a 1001 questions about things at all their appointments and you'll see other kiddos younger doing things your little might not be doing yet. Plus all the baby books will have your head spinning with age ranges and dates BUT I am here to tell you it is not a race. They WILL get there and it will be ok and if they need support because they just can't, it will still be ok!

Now we’re not saying there isn't a time frame in which you should seek out support, because we’re big proponents of the earlier services are implemented the better but what we’re saying is take some of the pressure off. Support their development at home but also step back and let them get there, there is no rush! Plus! Let’s be honest, developmental milestones aren’t even appropriate for some kiddos! They’ve got their own plan of skills- which is ok too!

Don't compare yourself to other moms and don't compare your tiny human to other tiny humans. They are all different and they all have their own time line and it's completely NORMAL and OKAY!

Questions about time lines? Milestones? How to create a promoting environment? How do these apply for my neurodivergent kiddo? Where do you start? Check out our website and grab a free 15 minute consult! We’d love to help!
