Assumptions, misinterpretations, lack of curiosity, lack of confirmation, domination, power struggles, overgeneralization, countertransference, circular reasoning, strawman fallacies, reducing potential options to 1-2 only, and personal attacks instead of issue-based discussions are among the factors that can create an illusion of communication. It is likely that we have all been guilty of one or more of these pitfalls at some point. To improve our communication, it may be beneficial to start by acknowledging our awareness of these issues, taking accountability for our actions, and making a conscious effort to alter our approach to conversations.
