Mental health is part of our health! Check in with a primary care doctor and other physicians to manage physical health and check in with a mental health counselor and prescribers to manage mental health.

It’s been HOT lately and causing people to feel a bit more depressed and anxious than usual for this time of year. Typically the summer sun brings brighter moods but when it’s too hot, we’re forced indoors to stay cool or avoid poor air quality. I encourage you to take some time in the early morning or late evening to get outside. I know it’s not ideal AND it’s important. A little sun and fresh air will boost your mood. An iced coffee makes it more enjoyable if that’s your thing and so does being by the water if you’re able to get close. Bring a book and take 15 minutes for yourself. You’re worth it.

May is mental health awareness month! Let’s break the stigma, be courageous and use our voices to talk to about our struggles with mental health. There is no shame in asking for help or engaging in therapy. Being a therapist doesn’t provide me with immunity. So for everyone out there that wonders, “Do therapists have therapists?”, the (uncomplicated) answer is yes!

This can be difficult for “people pleasers.” The desire to explain ourselves—justify our choices—is a trauma response. For instance, we may have previously felt like we were not believed without sufficient evidence. If someone is insisting that we explain ourselves (let’s use the example of canceling plans last minute), we need to consider expressing to them how that lands on us and potentially setting a stronger boundary like walking away from that conversation or person.

It’s wedding seasonal everybody! Don’t forget that it’s totally okay if you’re the one getting married and you’re feeling a little blue once the celebrations are over. Give yourself permission to grieve. It can be difficult to hold space for negative emotions during a joyful time AND you can do hard things.

This one can be hard to admit and just because someone has some red flags, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t partner with them. It’s all about awareness of unhealthy patterns and actively working to change them! What are some green and red flags for yourself?
